PROVO -- A sweep over New Mexico in Saturday's doubleheader behind the strong pitching performances of Paul Jacinto, Ken Gravley and Michel Bergeron moved BYU back into second place in the Mountain West Conference.

The two victories give BYU a record of 19-17 overall, 11-7 in conference to tie San Diego State. UNM falls to fourth place in the MWC with a record of 27-17, 10-8.

Jacinto (6-4) kept New Mexico off the board through five innings, giving him the complete game win. Jacinto stuck out six, giving up four runs on six hits in the shortened morning game, which was postponed due to rain.

"My team's been playing great behind me," Jacinto said. "The last couple of starts they have been scoring a lot of runs early."

BYU's Kainoa Obrey lit up the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the first inning, giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader.

Ranger Wiens extended that lead in the third with a double to score Doug Jackson from first base. Obrey knocked in another run with an opposite field single, making the score 4-0.

The 1983 Cougar baseball team was honored in the fifth inning of game one for its outstanding achievement of being ranked No. 1 at the end of the regular season.

"I loved the opportunity I had to play baseball here at BYU," Wally Joyner said. "The 1983 team was truly one of the best teams I ever played with. We were a close-knit team that pulled for each other."

BYU Assistant Athletics Director and former Head Baseball Coach Gary Pullins said, "This team (1983) was just an inspiration the way they supported each other."

In the fifth following the reunion applause, BYU got to UNM's Kris Gross by spraying four of his 11 hits surrendered for two of his six runs. Matt Bullen came in relief and loaded up the bases by hitting Casey Cloward in the shoulder. Wade Vest hit an infield single to second base, scoring Brock Jacobsen to give the Cougars a commanding 7-0 lead.

Both teams exploded in the sixth, Joe Salas and Josh Mader of UNM hit back-to-back home runs for the Lobos, putting them down 7-4. The Cougars came back with a rally of their own to score five runs on three hits.

MWC rules mandate that the first game of a double header be limited to seven innings, and because of the shortened game Chambers did not receive another at bat and a chance to extend his 18-game hitting streak. That season-high streak ended when he went 0-for-3. The new leader for the Cougars is Cloward at nine games, going a combined 2-for-6 in the doubleheader.

After having a 39-game hit streak broken on Thursday, Dusty Young started a new hit streak of two with a hit in his second at bat of game one and game two.

The Lobos got to starting pitcher Ken Gravley early in the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead off of back-to-back doubles by Mader and Chris Alexander.

After giving those two runs in the first, Gravley settled down, facing the minimum number of hitters in the second, fifth and sixth innings. He gave up only one more run after that first inning, going 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and striking out one in the game.

In the second, Cloward hit a sacrifice fly to center field with bases loaded to score the Cougars' first run of game two, making it 2-1.

Jackson brought the crowd to its feet with a game-tying solo home run in the third.

The Cougars took the lead in the sixth off an RBI double by Cloward. After five plus innings, Adrian Soto replaced starter Darren Coltrinari with the bases juiced. Soto proceeded to hit Jackson between the numbers on his first pitch to give BYU a 4-2 lead.

Curtis Rodriguez came in to pitch for Gravley in the seventh after Gravley lost his control and walked three Lobo hitters. Unable to record an out, Rodriguez gave up the lead on two hits with two outs, allowing New Mexico to tie it at 4-4. Michel Bergeron came on in relief of Rodriguez to strike out Salas, who homered earlier in the day, to end the inning and the bases-loaded threat.

BYU took the lead back for good in the seventh after Jake Stubblefield tripled in Obrey for the go ahead run, 5-4.

Bergeron recorded the win, striking out two and not allowing any hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

Only their second one-run victory in 11 chances, BYU Head Coach Vance Law said, "So many have gone the other way, it's nice to win one."

"I'm most pleased with how we competed and battled back," Law added.

The attendance at the doubleheader was 1,668.

The Cougars go on the road to take on first place UNLV in Las Vegas.

Second place in the Mountain West Conference baseball standings will become clearer after this week's three-game series where BYU hosts New Mexico.

BYU, 17-16 overall and 9-6 in the league, is in a three-way tie for second place with this week's opponent New Mexico, 26-15 and 9-6, and San Diego State.

A highlight of this week's activity is the reunion for the 1983 BYU baseball team which was ranked No. 1 at the end of the regular season. On Saturday at 12:30 p.m., the 1983 team including former major league greats Cory Snyder and Wally Joyner will be available at Miller Park on the concourse level for autographs and pictures. The first 500 fans will receive a souvenir photograph of that team.

The current Cougars are now above .500 for the first time since being 1-0 and 1-1 to start the season.

Scheduled to start for BYU on the mound for the opener is Jeff Mousser (4 3, 4.50) in Thursday's game which begins at 7 p.m. On Friday, also at 7 p.m., Paul Jacinto (5-4, 4.12) will take the hill. On Saturday at 1 p.m., Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.70) is the probable starter.

For the first time this season, NCAA rankings are available. BYU's Doug Jackson is ranked third nationally in triples, Kainoa Obrey is ranked 13th in doubles. BYU's batting average of .322 was ranked 22nd in the NCAA and the Cougars were ranked 27th in average runs scored at 7.9.

UNM's Sean Murray is ranked 44th at .409 in batting average and Cory Lizarraga is ranked 50th at .405. UNM's Chris Alexander is ranked second nationally in doubles, third in RBI. Murray is ranked 11th in RBI and Dusty Young is 26th. Young is sixth in doubles. The Lobos .348 batting average is second nationally and they are also second in scoring.

The Lobos took two of three from BYU last month at Albuquerque and are fresh off a 13-11 victory over Texas Tech earlier this week. BYU has won 11 of its past 14 games.

All of the BYU-UNM games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM. Friday and Saturday's games can also be heard through links on the Internet at www.byucougars.com.
