PROVO -- Ryan Chambers and Brock Jacobsen hit home runs Thursday to give BYU 17-8 victory over Utah.
"Tonight we got back some the momentum we lost in those one-run games to UNLV last week," Head Coach Vance Law said.
The victory gives BYU a 20-20 overall record, 12-10 record in the Mountain West Conference. Utah falls to 19-25, 6-15.
Utah jumped out on top of Jeff Mousser early, scoring two runs in the first inning off of a home run by Mike Westfall.
Hustle and smart base running gave BYU a 4-2 lead going into the second inning. Ranger Wiens hustled around third and slid under the catcher's tag to score the go ahead run for the Cougars. Jacobsen, on that same play, beat out a potential double play at first, and later stole second to set up BYU's fourth run of the game.
In the second, Utah kept the inning alive with two errors, allowing the Cougars to score five runs on just two hits. Again in the third inning BYU scored five runs on two hits, one of them a three-run home run by Ryan Chambers to make the score 14-2.
"We've been jumping on top early to give us the momentum," Chambers said, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Mousser settled down after the first inning, not giving up a hit until the sixth when his defense got him out of the inning by turning an unconventional double play that started when Tim Law nearly fell into the opponent's dugout making a play on a pop up. The double play was completed with a throw to third, but ended up catching Wick Udy in a run down between second and first with Law getting the putout.
"One of the question marks with our team is how well they'll deal with early adversity," Coach Law said. "Mousser did a great job of bouncing back. He was able to forget about the bad inning and pitch in the present."
Wiens, who moved down to give BYU some added productivity in the clean-up spot, went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jacobsen hit his team-leading eighth home run in the second in the game, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Recent BYU graduate, Jason Garcia entered the game in the seventh to pitch. In his first post-graduate outing he gave up a home run to Jared Pena. He pitched two innings, giving up five runs on three hits.
The Cougars return to the diamond on Friday at 7 p.m. for the second game of the series against the Utes. The first 1,000 fans arriving at the ballpark Friday will receive a BYU stress ball.

Sweeps are hoping to be put behind both by BYU and Utah's baseball teams as the rivals tangle in Provo for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
The host Cougars, now 19-20 overall and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, are coming off three consecutive losses last week at No. 20 UNLV. The Utes, now 19-24 and 6-14, were swept in a three-game series last week at New Mexico.
Last month in Salt Lake City, BYU swept Utah in a three-game series, the only MWC team to sweep the Utes at home. BYU, meanwhile, has only recorded a three-game sweep over one team in the MWC, Air Force two weeks ago, since Miller Park expanded two years ago.
Projected starters for BYU remain the same with Jeff Mousser (4-5, 5.57) on Thursday at 7 p.m., Paul Jacinto (6-5, 4.14) on Friday at 7 p.m., and Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.53) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will be televised live on both KBYU-TV and BYU-TV with Jay Monsen calling the play-by-play and Gary Sheide as color commentator.
All three games will also be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM and live on the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com. The live audio for games on Thursday and Friday will be delayed until 10 p.m., because of BYU Women's Conference.
The Cougars are smarting from last week's losses at UNLV, including the finale when it let a 7-1 lead through five-plus innings evaporate in an 11 10 loss. That loss was due in part to a MWC record-typing three-home-run performance by Stephen Ghutzman.
The three games against Utah start a consecutive eight-game homestand for BYU.
Among BYU's leaders in the latest NCAA statistics are Kainoa Obrey and Ranger Wiens, both tied at 15th in doubles; Doug Jackson is fifth in triples; and BYU is 29th in runs scored.
