PROVO -- Ryan Chambers and Ranger Wiens knocked Utah pitching around Friday in BYU's 16-5 victory in front of the fourth largest crowd in Miller Park history.

The Cougars won behind the cheers of 2,512 fans, the largest attendance thus far this season. BYU's record improved to 21-20 overall, 13-10 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah dropped its sixth in a row, sending its record to 19-26, 6-16.

"Hitting is contagious," BYU Head Coach Vance Law said. "And every one on the team is hitting well right now. I feel confident I can send any one up to the plate and they'll do what is asked of them."

Chambers hit the ball square in the first inning that sailed over the right field fence into the dormitory parking lot to give BYU a lead it would never relinquish. It was Chambers' eighth home run of the year, tying him for the team lead with Brock Jacobsen.

On consecutive nights, Chambers has paced the Cougars, going 2-for-3 on Friday, with three RBI and four runs scored. In the series, he is hitting 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI.

Wiens hit a ball off the 388 marker in left field to send in two runs and give the Cougars a 7-1 lead. On the play Wiens passed up Chambers rounding second and was called out.

Paul Jacinto pitched three innings of no-hit ball before Wick Udy homered to make the score 4-1. He threw 108 pitches, striking out three and spraying seven hits around in seven innings.

"Jacinto is one of the funnest pitchers I've ever caught," catcher Casey Cloward said. "When we're on the same page we're unstoppable."

BYU went up by 10 runs in the seventh off of Kainoa Obrey's two-run home run, making the score 14-4.

"At the beginning of the season we were known for guiding towards the end of the games, losing one-run games," Cloward said. "Now we're looking to finish every game strong."

BYU looks for the sweep against Utah at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Should BYU pull that feat, it would be the first six-game sweep since 1986. Saturday's game will be televised live on KBYU (channel 11) and BYU-TV.

Sweeps are hoping to be put behind both by BYU and Utah's baseball teams as the rivals tangle in Provo for a three-game series beginning Thursday.

The host Cougars, now 19-20 overall and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, are coming off three consecutive losses last week at No. 20 UNLV. The Utes, now 19-24 and 6-14, were swept in a three-game series last week at New Mexico.

Last month in Salt Lake City, BYU swept Utah in a three-game series, the only MWC team to sweep the Utes at home. BYU, meanwhile, has only recorded a three-game sweep over one team in the MWC, Air Force two weeks ago, since Miller Park expanded two years ago.

Projected starters for BYU remain the same with Jeff Mousser (4-5, 5.57) on Thursday at 7 p.m., Paul Jacinto (6-5, 4.14) on Friday at 7 p.m., and Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.53) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Saturday's game will be televised live on both KBYU-TV and BYU-TV with Jay Monsen calling the play-by-play and Gary Sheide as color commentator.

All three games will also be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM and live on the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com. The live audio for games on Thursday and Friday will be delayed until 10 p.m., because of BYU Women's Conference.

The Cougars are smarting from last week's losses at UNLV, including the finale when it let a 7-1 lead through five-plus innings evaporate in an 11 10 loss. That loss was due in part to a MWC record-typing three-home-run performance by Stephen Ghutzman.

The three games against Utah start a consecutive eight-game homestand for BYU.

Among BYU's leaders in the latest NCAA statistics are Kainoa Obrey and Ranger Wiens, both tied at 15th in doubles; Doug Jackson is fifth in triples; and BYU is 29th in runs scored.
