PROVO -- Ranger Wiens and Doug Jackson teamed up for a ninth-inning come-from-behind victory on Saturday to give BYU baseball a 7-6 win and a season sweep of Utah.
"The team was excited about the ninth in the dugout with the shark rally hats on," BYU Head Coach Vance Law said. "We executed the way I wanted it to in the ninth."
Coach Law sent up five consecutive lefties in the ninth to counter Brady Martinez' deceptive slider and form a come-from-behind victory. The loss was Utah's seventh consecutive, dropping its record to 19-27 and 6-17 in the league.
Pinch hitter Clayton Carson singled and then moved to third on a fielder's choice. Carson scored the tying run with two outs on an infield single, Jackson hustled down the line to beat the throw out at first and to keep the inning alive. Wiens drove a ball into left field to score Jackson from second, giving BYU the sweep and its third one-run victory of the season.
"We get to enjoy the win for a day, but then we have a lot of work to do to prepare for San Diego State," Wiens said.
Nate Schlieman's throw in the first inning went into left field when he tried to throw out Wiens who was attempting to steal third. Wiens got to his feet and scored on the errant throw, putting BYU up 1-0.
In the second, Utah's Eric Chevalier set up the Utes' first run of the game when his line drive to right field took an unexpected bounce over Ryan Chambers' head to roll to the wall for a triple.
Brock Jacobsen was almost picked off in the second inning until Utah pitcher, Jason Price, slipped and fell on the wet infield while trying to keep Jacobsen in a run down. Price found himself in a pickle in that inning when he beamed Jackson to load the bases. Chambers showed a good eye at the plate, drawing a walk to give BYU a 3-1 lead.
Utah did not want to go back home winless, and in the fifth inning with two outs the Utes strung together six consecutive hits against Ken Gravley, highlighted by Chevalier's three-run home run to put them up 6-5. It was the first time in the series Utah led past the first inning. Chevalier went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the day.
Pitchers for both teams started to throw bee-bees after the fifth inning, not allowing a run in the second half of the game until BYU rallied in the ninth. Michel Bergeron entered the game in the fifth and stopped the Ute scoring by only allowing four hits to the 19 batters he faced.
"Mike did a great job, throwing four scoreless innings," Wiens said.
The BYU-Utah baseball game will be replayed at 10 p.m. on BYU-TV and 11:45 p.m. on KBYU-TV (channel 11).
BYU, now 22-20 and 14-10 in the Mountain West Conference, hosts Tony Gwynn's San Diego State Aztecs next week. The first game of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m., which will be televised live by KBYU-TV (channel 11) and BYU-TV.

Sweeps are hoping to be put behind both by BYU and Utah's baseball teams as the rivals tangle in Provo for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
The host Cougars, now 19-20 overall and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, are coming off three consecutive losses last week at No. 20 UNLV. The Utes, now 19-24 and 6-14, were swept in a three-game series last week at New Mexico.
Last month in Salt Lake City, BYU swept Utah in a three-game series, the only MWC team to sweep the Utes at home. BYU, meanwhile, has only recorded a three-game sweep over one team in the MWC, Air Force two weeks ago, since Miller Park expanded two years ago.
Projected starters for BYU remain the same with Jeff Mousser (4-5, 5.57) on Thursday at 7 p.m., Paul Jacinto (6-5, 4.14) on Friday at 7 p.m., and Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.53) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will be televised live on both KBYU-TV and BYU-TV with Jay Monsen calling the play-by-play and Gary Sheide as color commentator.
All three games will also be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM and live on the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com. The live audio for games on Thursday and Friday will be delayed until 10 p.m., because of BYU Women's Conference.
The Cougars are smarting from last week's losses at UNLV, including the finale when it let a 7-1 lead through five-plus innings evaporate in an 11 10 loss. That loss was due in part to a MWC record-typing three-home-run performance by Stephen Ghutzman.
The three games against Utah start a consecutive eight-game homestand for BYU.
Among BYU's leaders in the latest NCAA statistics are Kainoa Obrey and Ranger Wiens, both tied at 15th in doubles; Doug Jackson is fifth in triples; and BYU is 29th in runs scored.
