COLORADO SPRINGS -- After a combined 75 hits, 64 runs and 15 home runs in the doubleheader, Brigham Young swept Air Force 19-16 and 25-4 on Friday to clinch a tie for second in the Mountain West Conference.

The Cougars improved to 28-21 overall and 18-11 in the MWC, and pending the outcome of this series and the New Mexico-SDSU series, BYU could grab sole possession of second place. AFA fell to 14-37, 2-27.

Brock Jacobsen led the barrage of hits and runs to guide BYU in a come-from-behind victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Twenty-two hours after the first pitch, the first inning for BYU and AFA ended with the Falcons on top 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Thursday's game was called due to rain and rescheduled as a Friday doubleheader.

Jacobsen belted his ninth home run of the season in the second inning to tie the game up at 2-2 at the hitter friendly Falcon Field. Jacobsen went 4-for-5 with five runs in the first game.

"This was a crazy game out there," Jacobsen said. "It was nice to see the ball fly after you hit it, but I don't think I want to make this place my home after having to defend those deep fly balls in the outfield."

Senior Daniel Petro hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Falcons a third-inning lead in game one. AFA scored three runs in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

The Falcons started eight seniors in game one, including starting pitcher Josh Zumbrun and designated hitter Josh Phifer. The Falcons are graduating 13 players Saturday, and among the graduates are Derck Kasel and Tony Shockley.

In the fourth, BYU's Clayton Carson hit a shot down the line to score Jacobsen, who put himself into scoring position by stealing second base. The Cougars scored two to put themselves down a run.

One pitch by Jeff Mousser in the fourth to Shockley put the Cougars down by two runs in game one. Shockley hit a flare down the right field line that houses a short porch for a home run. A double by Petro to score his third RBI of the game sent Mousser to the bench down 7-4. Phifer, the best hitter in the conference, clobbered the first pitch he saw from reliever Tyler Heid for a two-run home run. Kasel hit Heid's next pitch for back-to-back home runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

BYU tagged Zumbrun for three runs on two home runs in the fifth to cut the Falcons' six-run lead in half, 10-7. Ryan Chambers and Jake Stubblefield each hit their ninth home run of the season to tie Jacobsen for the team lead.

Rob Itri hit a big two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning to complete the Cougars' comeback and take an 11-10 lead in game one. AFA's Kasel who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game up in the sixth.

"We seemed to match them run for run until (Michel) Bergeron came in to shut them down," Jacobsen said.

BYU's Tyler Dabo found himself in a no-out bases loaded jam in the seventh. Adam Howes singled up the middle to score two and to give back the lead to AFA. Air Force scored three runs before BYU recorded an out, and ended the inning with a 14-11 lead.

Michel Bergeron, the fourth pitcher to take the mound for the Cougars in the game, recorded his sixth win against three losses, by going three innings and giving up two runs.

Ken Hodgson walked in the tying run of the game in the eighth and then gave up a seeing-eye single to Chambers to score the go-ahead run. In a game that had gone back-and-forth, BYU regained the lead, 18-14, with a seven-run inning.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Doug Jackson, who was 4-for-4 in game one, continued to hit by leading off with his eighth triple of the season and 23rd of his career. It was his first three-bagger since March 25th against Southern Utah. He later scored to put the Cougars up one in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kainoa Obrey.

A home run by Phifer and Howes gave the Falcons the lead, 3-1, going into the second inning in game two.

The high-scoring affair from game one continued into game two. Chambers led off the second inning with a triple and Casey Cloward knocked him home with a triple of his own. Cloward's 16-game hitting streak was snapped when he went 0-for-1 in game one, pinch hitting for Tim Law and hitting into a fielder's choice late in the game.

In the fourth inning of the nightcap, the Cougars pulled away from the Falcons 12-3, scoring nine runs (six unearned), highlighted by Obrey's near grand slam to left center that hit off the top of the wall and Jackson's two doubles in the inning.

Obrey, in game two, made the home run race for the Cougars a four-man affair, hitting his ninth of the season. One out later, Chambers smacked hit his 10th home run to give BYU a 14-3 lead.

After giving up two runs and three hits in the first inning, Paul Jacinto bared down, allowing only a hit and no runs through the following three innings before he gave up a home run to Nathan Derohan in the fifth. Jacinto struck out eight in seven innings of work.

BYU added to its lead in the seventh inning with three runs and the eighth inning with eight runs, highlighted by Wade Vest's grand slam to give the Cougars a 25-4 lead.

The Cougars take on the Falcons on Saturday at 2 p.m., MDT and can be listened to live on KOVO 960 AM and on the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.

If BYU is to play Utah next week, it hinges on the outcome of this weekend's games, including the Cougars' three-game series at the Air Force Academy.

The Cougars, now 26-21 overall and 16-11 in the Mountain West Conference, have three games starting at 2 p.m. each day, beginning Thursday at Colorado Springs, Colo. BYU is in third place in the MWC as it readies for next week's conference tourney at Albuquerque, N.M., trailing second-place New Mexico who is 17-10 going into its series at San Diego State.

"We can't take them lightly," said BYU Head Coach Vance Law of the Air Force Academy. "We are not playing a bunch of stiffs, they are athletes."

Likely to start on the mound for the Cougars are Jeff Mousser (5-6, 5.87), Paul Jacinto (8-5, 3.87) and Ken Gravley (4-1, 4.97).

The Cougars are ranked 28th in the nation with a .320 batting average and 20th in runs scored. BYU's Ranger Wiens is 32nd nationally with a .407 batting average and is sixth in doubles. Teammate Kainoa Obrey is ranked 22nd in doubles, while Doug Jackson is ninth in triples.

Cougar catcher Casey Cloward has a current 16-game hitting streak.

Air Force brings a 14-35 record overall and a 2-25 league mark into the series.

All of the BYU-AFA games will be carried live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM. Friday and Saturday's games are broadcast live on the Internet through links on www.byucougars.com. Live stats are available on all of the games through the same links.
