PROVO -- Completing a 106-run, six-game series against Air Force, BYU concluded the sweep with 10-9 and 12-4 victories on Saturday at Larry H. Miller Field.
"It's fun to get out here, play all day and get a lot of innings in," said sophomore Ben Saylor. "It's good preparation for the tournament. But it is draining as well."
With the wins, the Cougars close out the regular season with a .500 winning percentage for the first time this season finishing 28-28 and 18-12 in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons fall to 5-47 and remain winless in the conference for the first time in their history with a 0-28 record.
"You hate to see any teams, especially a classy act like Air Force, struggle so bad," said BYU head coach Vance Law. "But I didn't want us to have the only black mark in the conference against the Falcons."
Unlike the previous four games in the series, the Cougars found themselves having to make a comeback in the final innings of game one on Saturday. Down 9-6 in the bottom of the eighth, BYU scored four runs to take back the lead.
Blair Lucas led off the eighth with a double and scored the first run on a wild pitch. With two outs, the Cougars loaded the bases for Saylor. After taking the first three pitches for balls and then facing a full count, Saylor knocked a single over a leaping shortstop to score two runs and tie the game. On the play, Kevin Bills came around from first to score the go ahead run on a fielding error by the left fielder.
"Saylor came up with a really clutch hit and then (Coach Ryan) Roberts did a good job sending Bills when Air Force didn't hit their cutoff man," Law said.
Roberts, in his second season as an assistant at BYU, made the game decisions for five of the six games against the Falcons. Law handed the reigns over to his hitting coach for much of the series to give him the opportunity to gain valuable experience as a coach.
Senior catcher Adam Wilkes led BYU with a 4-for-4 performance in the second game of the doubleheader. Wilkes laid down four singles, knocking in two runs and scored once.
The game ended after a predetermined seven innings due to the Falcons' flight schedule.
In the later innings, Wade Vest made a couple spectacular plays in the field prompting Law after the game to compare him to the best second basemen he's ever played with.
"I don't know if there's a better second baseman that I've played with than Wade Vest, even in the major leagues," Law said. "He's a big league second baseman if he could only hit a little bit more. He is absolutely the best base runner I have ever seen."
The Cougars outscored Air Force 84-32 in the series, scoring double digits in all six games. Kory Knell added his fifth home run in two days in the first inning of game one. Bills followed him with a homer and then hit his third one out in two days in the second game. Brandon Taylor also hit two home runs in the game to extend his team lead to 13 long balls on the season.
Joshua Barrett (1-1) picked up his first win after entering the first game in relief. Paul Jacinto (3-9) pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. It is the second time this season the senior has recorded a win and a save in the same week.
In game two, Bryce Burger (1-3) earned his first victory after pitching three perfect innings in relief. Centerfielder Ryan Chambers closed the game out by striking out the side in the seventh. Chamber's pitching performance is the first in his career at BYU.
Between games, the Cougars' eight seniors were honored for their accomplishments at BYU in front of a 1,487 fans. The seniors honored were Kevin Bills, Tim Law, Ranger Wiens, Blair Lucas, Adam Wilkes, Wade Vest, Paul Jacinto and Bryce Burger. All eight were major contributors in the Cougars' final home series of the season.
The Cougars missed reaching the 100,000-attendance mark at Miller field by 323 fans. BYU averaged 1,624 fans per game, the highest average in the stadiums four-year history. The Cougars drew 24,355 fans to 15 dates this season.
BYU now enters the MWC Tournament as the fourth seed and will play No. 5 Utah on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (PST). The Cougars bring a 13-game winning streak against the Utes into the opening-round game.
"When you win as many as we have in a row (against Utah), you don't want to be picked yet," Law said. "I know we're not going into the tournament overconfident."
The conference race came down to the final inning of the final weekend as three teams, UNLV, New Mexico and San Diego State, were vying for the regular season MWC title and a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament. New Mexico beat UNLV on Saturday, resulting in both teams tying with a 20-10 league record. San Diego State claimed the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship after sweeping Utah in its final series and finishing 19-9.
"I think five teams have an opportunity to win the tournament," Law said. "Utah struggled a little bit, but even they have enough to knock a few teams out in the tournament."
The Aztecs enter the tournament with a first round bye and will play the winner of the BYU-Utah game on Thursday at 3 p.m. (PST). The loser of the BYU-Utah game will play the loser of the Air Force-UNLV game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (PST).
"We're looking to win it," Law said. "If we had been playing the way we are now at the beginning of the conference schedule, we would have been in the middle of the hunt for the (No. 1 seed)."
All of BYU's tournament games will be broadcasted live on KOVO 960 AM with veteran Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. The games are also available as audiocasts and on the BYU Radio channel through DirecTV and the Dish Network. All three games will also have live stats. Links to the audiocasts and webcasts can be found on BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.

A six-game series in Provo with the Air Force Academy beginning Thursday concludes BYU's regular season.
The Cougars (22-28, 12-12 in the Mountain West Conference) will play three doubleheaders in three-straight days against the Falcons (5-41, 0-22). Thursday and Friday's doubleheaders begins at 4 p.m. with the second game starting close to 7 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
This week's series will make up a postponed three-game series between the two teams. BYU traveled to Colorado Springs to play Air Force on April 22-24, but weather postponed the series. The Falcons have had eight postponed conference games this year.
The Cougars are 113-21 all-time against Air Force. BYU is 7-3 in the last 10 games against the Falcons and finished 5-1 against them last year. The two schools first met in 1963 for a two-game series. The Cougars won both games.
Patrick Wells (6-4, 5.65) and Paul Jacinto (2-9, 6.14) are scheduled to get the starts for BYU in Thursday's doubleheader. The Cougars' remaining four starters have yet to be announced.
In its fourth full season at Larry H. Miller Field, attendance closes in on the 100,000 milestone. With three home dates left, the Cougars need to draw 4,998 fans to reach the date this year, an average of 1,666 fans per date.
