FRESNO -- Jeff Hiestand homered twice and knocked in six as BYU pounded Chicago State 21-3 on Tuesday.
The Blue Cougars (7-15) had 14 hits in the game and sent 55 batters to the plate in their first ever match-up with the Green Cougars (0-10) at the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic hosted by Fresno State. The win is the third in a row for BYU, its longest winning streak this year.
One of three BYU players to have three hits in the game, Hiestand finished the day 3-for-5 with five runs scored. The two home runs, a three-run shot in the seventh and a solo blast in the ninth, are his second and third of the year.
Brandon Taylor went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Adam Wilkes went 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Casey Cloward hit his second three-run homer of the season, a pinch hit blast in the eighth inning.
J.D. Stambaugh (1-0) received his second start for BYU and allowed one run off five hits in five innings for his first win. Jonathan Duncan (0-3) picked up his third loss as Chicago State has yet to win a game this season.
Two walks and a double by Taylor to begin the second inning loaded the bases for BYU. After Hiestand's fielder's choice scored one run, Wilkes hit a two-run triple to center field. The Cougars of BYU went on to score six runs in the second and continued to rack up the score in the innings following. Only the first and fourth innings went scoreless for BYU as it scored three or more runs five times in the game.
Chicago State scored its first run in the fourth after a double by John Torres. The Green Cougars remained scoreless into the bottom of the ninth, scoring two more runs.
BYU will play tournament host Fresno State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (PST). After losing 13-3 to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday, Monmouth will play Chicago State at 10 a.m. (PST) and Dallas Baptist will play Portland at 1:30 p.m. (PST) in the other Wednesday tournament games.
