FRESNO -- Rallying twice in the final two innings, BYU mounted a 5-4 comeback victory over Portland on Friday at the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic.
The Cougars (10-15) scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull ahead of the Pilots, 4-2. After Portland (3-12) tied the game in the top of the ninth, Kory Knell singled in Wade Vest for the walk-off win, BYU's season high sixth straight victory.
Knell finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. He also doubled to knock in Ryan Chambers in the eighth inning, tying the game at two and opening the door for the Cougars' comeback.
For the second time this week and third time this year, junior catcher Casey Cloward homered, giving BYU its first run in the fifth inning. Cloward finished 2-for-4. Chambers hit his third triple in as many days and also finished 2-for-4. Ranger Wiens led BYU with three hits, finishing 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Vest and Tim Law extended their hitting streaks to eight.
Jusin Su'a (2-1) started for the Cougars, allowing two runs off eight hits through seven innings. The junior struck out two in a no-decision effort. Lance Beus (2-1) picked up his second win, striking out the final out in the ninth inning.
Portland took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Nik Kosach who went 3-for-5. After BYU tied the game in the fifth, the Pilots took a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Colton Homme led Portland with a 4-for-4 performance, singling in the seventh inning run. The Pilots then tied the game in the ninth inning, scoring two runs on wild pitches.
The Cougars now wait to see who they will face in the tournaments' championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. (PST). BYU (5-0) is the only undefeated team in the tournament hosted by Fresno State. Portland, Fresno State and Dallas Baptist are all currently in second place with two losses. A second place tie will be decided by run totals in the tournament.
In six Classic appearances, the Cougars have won one title back in 1983. The '83 team featured five future major leaguers and is the only BYU team to be ranked No. 1 at one point in the season. The Cougars have come in second twice at the Classic.
BYU plays Fresno State in the championship game, as the Bulldogs defeated Monmouth, 11-3 on Friday night. Carrying the best record in the tournament, the Cougars will be the home team in the championship. Saturday's championship game will be available for live audio.
