Nakayama Ensures Twinbill Split

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(February 25, 2005) After dropping a 5-4 heart-breaker in 10 innings of the first game, BYU bounced back to win Friday's nightcap, 13-5, against host San Jose State.

The Cougars (2-2), who lost game one on a 10th-inning error, used a hitting barrage to make sure game two wouldn't be close.

The opening game of the doubleheader started out as a pitching dual with BYU junior hurler Dave Horlacher, throwing four shutout innings. However, San Jose pitcher Branden Dewing matched Horlacher's effort, pitching four scoreless innings of his own.

The Cougars grabbed a fifth inning lead, 2-0, only to be matched by the Spartans two fifth-inning runs.

Last year's home run leader Brandon Taylor hit BYU's first round-tripper of the season in the sixth inning to give the Cougars the lead again. The lead was short-lived, as the Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the sixth in part due to Nate Corrick's second double of the game.

BYU failed to take advantage of men reaching base in the middle innings. The Cougars' sixth, seventh and eighth frames all ended with inning-ending double plays. The score remained 4-3 until the top of the ninth, when BYU's Sean McNaughton came up clutch for the Cougars. McNaughton hammered a game-tying RBI single to score Kory Knell on a two-strike count with two out in the inning.

Junior pitcher James Platt retired the side in the Spartans half of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

The Spartans won the game in the bottom of the 10th when pinch-hitter Justin Santich-Hughes, got a single. The Cougars committed an error on the play that allowed Corrick to score the game-winning run.

In game two, the Cougars got offensive. In the first inning, Apana Nakayama hit a towering, 410-foot, three-run home run to deep centerfield with two out. The Spartans countered with a Sam Hall two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

BYU continued its torrid hitting with a big inning in the third, scoring four runs highlighted by Knell's two-run home run with two batters out. The homer ended SJS starting pitcher Brandon Hennessey's night. Casey Cloward joined the hitting parade in the sixth, adding a RBI double. Taylor and Nakayama each picked up a double as the Cougars cashed in four more runs in the seventh.

SJSU brings a 4-5 record into Saturday's series finale, which starts at noon (PST).

Hot Hitters Head to San Jose

Image

PROVO, Utah--(Feb. 22, 2005) Fresh off a two-game split with the No. 18 UC Irvine Anteaters, BYU heads to San Jose State for a three-game series with the Spartans beginning Thursday.

The Cougars (1-1) will try to continue swinging hot bats against the Spartans (3-4). Game times are 6 p.m. (PST) on Thursday and Friday with a noon start on Saturday. None of the games will be carried via the Internet.

After an impressive debut, junior Dave Horlacher (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will make his second division one start Thursday. Lefty Patrick Wells (0-1, 8.31) is expected to start Friday and junior college transfer Brandon Christiansen (0-0, 0.00) will make his Cougar pitching debut Saturday.

BYU head coach Vance Law is cautiously optimistic after the first weekend of the season.

"I wanted to go out with the attitude that we would win games and not just show up at the ballpark," he said.

The Cougars did show up, blasting 30 hits in two games against a good UC Irvine pitching team. BYU heads into the San Jose batting .357 in the early season while holding its opponents to a .269 average.

"I thought we hit the ball very well," Law said. "My biggest concern is whether we would compete and I think we did."

Although the Cougars split the series and looked very good against UC Irvine, they still hope to improve against the Spartans.

"We are still in a finding-out-about-ourselves mode," Law said. "I can't tell exactly where we are after just one weekend."

BYU flies out Thursday morning for the evening game.
