No. 17 OSU Sweeps Cougars

CORVALLIS -- No. 17 Oregon State handed BYU its first series loss of the season, sweeping the Cougars 12-5 and 11-6 Tuesday.

Game one, suspended due to rain Monday night, finished Tuesday afternoon ending a six-game winning streak for BYU (17-7-1, 5-1 Mountain West Conference).

The Beavers (21-4) were leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when play was suspended.

Ryan Gipson's RBI double in the fourth inning is the game's only extra-base hit until OSU's Andy Jenkins doubled before Scott Nelson hit a pinch hit grand slam in the sixth when the game continued on Tuesday.

The Cougars faced a tough pitcher in OSU starter Jonah Nickerson, who was replaced by Kevin Gunderson when the game resumed. Nickerson came into the game with a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.05. In five innings Monday, he struck out eight of the 13 BYU batters who went down at the plate.

The Cougars' first two runs of the game came on a Sean McNaughton RBI single in the top of the third and again in the eighth inning when he scored from second on a two-base error by the second baseman. McNaughton and Knell each had three singles to lead the Cougars in game one.

BYU scored four runs in that eighth inning, the next two coming from a two-run double with one out by Ryan Chambers. Chambers scored when Knell singled to center.

BYU regulars Jeff Hiestand--last week's MWC player of the week--Ben Saylor and Casey Nelson did not play in either game.

McNaughton led off game two with a first-inning homer. Not to be outdone, Jacoby Ellsbury countered with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score at one. OSU went on to take the lead 3-1 in its side of the first frame on a pair of RBI singles.

The Beavers extended their lead to 6-1 in the third inning highlighted by a Shea McFeely two-run single into left-center with one out in the inning.

Meanwhile, the Cougars were unable to generate any offense as Oregon State freshman starting pitcher Daniel Turpen kept the dangerous BYU bats in check through the middle innings.

The Cougars' Apana Nakayama was able to add a solo home run in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-2. OSU answered Nakayama's homer with a two-run round-tripper by Lonnie Lechelt in the bottom half of the same frame.

The Beavers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cruise to an 11-2 lead. BYU added four runs on a series of walks in the eighth inning after the game was well out of hand.

Game two of the series marked the most hits BYU pitchers have given up in one game this season. Also, Oregon State held BYU hitters under 10 hits for only the sixth time.

Next up for the Cougars is a three game series against Air Force beginning Thursday at Larry H. Miller Field. Game times are 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday with an 8 p.m. opening pitch Saturday.

Saturday's late start is due to the LDS Church General Priesthood Meeting. All three of the games will be broadcast live on KOVO Radio 960 AM. There is a shirt and tie special for half-price admission to all who come straight from Priesthood Meeting. Saturday's game will also be carried via the Internet. Baseball games Monday and Tuesday at Oregon State will be a showdown for BYU as it travels to Corvallis, Ore.

The Cougars, 17-5-1 overall and tied for first place with UNLV at 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference, have a pair of games against Oregon State, 19-4.

This is the second-best start for BYU in school history. BYU was 18-5 in 1980, 17-6 in 1983 (the year we were ranked No. 1 going into the NCAA Regionals), 15-6 in 1969, 15-6-2 in 1986 and 16-7 in 1972.

BYU has won its last six games in a row, 15 of its past 17 games, and had an eight-game win streak earlier in the season. OSU has won 10 of its last 12 games.

"This will give us a good indicator where we stand," said BYU Coach Vance Law, whose team has victories over nationally ranked UC Irvine, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts thus far.

OSU is the highest-ranked team BYU has played to date. The Beavers are No. 14 in the NCBWA Poll, No. 18 in Baseball America, No. 23 in Sports Weekly/ESPN and No. 28 in Collegiate Baseball. BYU has not received votes in any of these national polls this season, but the Cougars are currently rated No. 14 by Boyd's World, a power-ranking system which has OSU at No. 2.

The Beavers open their Pac-10 Conference season this weekend when they host the University of California, starting on Friday. OSU moved up last Saturday's finale of a three-game series in Corvallis against Dallas Baptist to a Friday doubleheader which the Beavers swept.

The Cougars probable starters for the OSU games are juniors Matt Jensen (4-0, 5.03) and Mitch Woolf (1-0, 4.30), respectively for Monday's game at 5 p.m. (PST) and Tuesday's 1 p.m. (PST) tilt. Mainline starters David Horlacher (1-1), Brandon Christiansen (2-0) and Blake Torgerson (2-1) will not make the trip to Oregon in order to be rested for their usual weekend rotation as BYU prepares to host Air Force, 4-16 and 0-3, on Thursday.

Both BYU and OSU swept the only common opponent between the two this season, New Mexico State. OSU won a pair of games against NMSU at a tournament in Arizona to start the season, while BYU swept the Aggies in a three-game series three weeks ago at Las Cruces.

OSU leads the series with BYU, 8-6 in a series that started in 1971. The Beavers won the last meeting in 1995 at a tournament in Spokane, Wash., 19-3. BYU won the previous meeting in 1991 at the Riverside Baseball Invitational in California, 5-1. The two teams have played one game away from tournament action in 1972, which BYU won, 5-2.
