Seven Home Runs Propel Rout at NMSU

Image

LAS CRUCES -- It looked like a home run derby as BYU hit seven dingers Saturday to propel a 22-8 rout of New Mexico State to sweep the series.

It was the first time the Cougars (9-4-1) completed a series sweep outside of Utah since 2002, when they took three straight at UNLV. BYU has now won six in a row, while NMSU falls to 10-11.

It didn't take long for the hitting barrage to get going, as the Cougars' Sean McNaughton and Marcos Villezcas led off the game with back-to-back home runs. It was the second time this week that McNaughton started a game with a round-tripper. Ben Saylor added a two-run shot of his own to give BYU an early 4-0 lead.

The Aggies responded in their side of the first frame. Vince Rodden and Jason Long led off the bottom of the first with a pair of singles. After Cougars starter Blake Torgerson hit Mark Aranda with a pitch NMSU designated hitter Adam Harvey tied the game with a grand slam. The Aggies went on to take the lead, 5-4, when Rodden walked with the bases loaded again.

BYU tied the game on Kory Knell's second homer of the season, a solo shot to left field. NMSU responded with a two-run long ball in the bottom of the third to take its last lead of the game. Torgerson settled in, and the Cougars hitters exploded.

BYU had massive middle innings, scoring a combined 17 runs in the fifth and sixth frames to blow the game wide open. In the fifth, the Cougars scored all of the seven runs with two out in the inning. Casey Nelson hit an opposite field, three-run home run and was followed by McNaughton's second homer of the game. He now leads the team with six dingers.

In the sixth inning BYU didn't wait until there were two out in the inning to start scoring. The Cougars got a two-run and RBI singles from Knell and Apana Nakayama, respectively. Then Brandon Taylor entered the home run parade with a grand slam to put BYU up 22-7. The Aggies added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final 22-8.

The Cougars return home for two games against Colorado State Pueblo Monday and Tuesday at 4 p.m., before starting Mountain West Conference play with a weekend series at New Mexico.

UVSC Is Tuesday's Home Opener

Image

PROVO -- After going 3-2 on an Oklahoma road trip that featured two ranked opponents, BYU opens its home schedule Tuesday against UVSC at 3 p.m., at Larry H. Miller Field.

The Cougars (5-4-1) are fresh off their first series win of the season, taking two of three from No. 30 Oral Roberts. BYU also split its two games with No. 25 Oklahoma State. The Wolverines (5-9) have lost three in a row, going 1-3 at the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, where they defeated tournament champion Washington State.

UVSC will be broadcasting the BYU game live on the Internet with Zach Fraser calling the play-by-play. The link to this broadcast can be found at www.byucougars.com on on the baseball schedule page.

BYU head coach Vance Law is pleased with the way his team has started the season.

"We've been working hard together and look forward to coming home even if it is only for one game right now," he said.

Matt Jensen will make his division one starting debut on the mound against UVSC. Prior to his church mission to Thailand, Jensen pitched for the Wolverines. He is one of four current Cougars that have transferred from UVSC. BYU starters Brandon Taylor, Ben Saylor and Apana Nakayama also will be playing against their former team. Brad Hales, a current starting middle infielder for the Wolverines, transferred last season from BYU.

Law and Cougar assistant Ryan Roberts also have UVSC ties. Law is a former assistant coach at UVSC. Roberts played and coached with the Wolverines, before doing both roles at BYU.

After Tuesday's game, BYU will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for a three-game weekend series against New Mexico State (10-8) beginning Thursday.
