Big Sixth Inning Tops UVSC

Image

PROVO -- An eight-run sixth inning propelled BYU to a 13-10 victory over Utah Valley State Tuesday night at Larry H. Miller Field.

It was BYU's (14-5-1, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) second victory over Division I newcomer UVSC (6-17) and the Cougars third victory overall.

The game was played in cold, wet conditions and it took a while for either team to heat up. BYU head coach Vance Law feels fortunate that the game even got played after nearly a half-hour delay.

"I was pleased that we got the game in," he said. "We were patient and caught a break in the weather."

The Wolverines scored first in the second inning when former Cougar Brad Hales got a bases-loaded walk. UVSC put another run up in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 lead.

BYU fought back in its side of the third, manufacturing a run to cut the lead in half. The Cougars scored when Ryan Chambers walked and was driven in by a Marcos Villezcas sacrifice fly. BYU captured the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Jeff Hiestand and Ben Saylor each hit the first of their two doubles and each came around to score.

BYU added two in the fifth before exploding for eight runs in the sixth inning. The Cougars sent 12 batters two the plate that inning. The sixth featured four BYU home runs. Chambers hit a round-tripper in his fifth consecutive game. Sean McNaughton and Villezcas later went deep back-to-back and Brandon Taylor added a three-run blast on the first pitch of a new Wolverine reliever. The Cougars scored seven runs before UVSC recorded an out in the inning.

"We swung the bat well in the sixth then let them back into the game," Law said.

UVSC trimmed the lead from 13-5 to 13-10--scoring three in the seventh and two in the eighth--but ultimately fell short. Justin Su`a came in and pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the save, his first of the season.

BYU continues MWC play this week when it hosts rival Utah for a three game series. The games are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start Saturday. All three games will have live audio and can be heard on KOVO 960 AM or on the Internet.

Night Baseball Starts Tuesday

Image

Night baseball games now start at BYU this week, beginning with Tuesday's 7 p.m. tilt between BYU and Utah Valley State.

BYU, now 13-5-1, hosts UVSC, 6-16, for the second time this season. The Cougars beat the Wolverines, 15-8, earlier this month at Larry H. Miller Field.

The Cougars are likely to start lefty Patrick Wells (1-1, 5.23) on the mound. The senior has been absent from action for several weeks due to tendonitis.

Following the BYU-UVSC game, the Cougars ready for a clash with the University of Utah, 7-13 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference.

The three-game series with Utah begins on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's finale between BYU and Utah in Provo starts at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a youth clinic.

BYU brings a 2-1 MWC record into this week's action, good enough for second place in the league. Last week, BYU had an eight-game winning streak stopped at New Mexico before the Cougars bounced back to win the last two games against the Lobos.

The probable pitching rotation for BYU will be Dave Horlacher (1-1, 3.90), followed by Brandon Christiansen (1-0, 4.32) and Blake Torgerson (2-1, 5.52).

Those BYU-Utah games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio (960 AM) locally and via the Internet (see links on the BYU baseball schedule on www.byucougars.com).

A multi-page release can be found by downloading the PDF file at the top of this story, which gives a detailed analysis of the Cougars.
