MWC Title Escapes Grasp

Image

SALT LAKE CITY -- BYU's magic ran out as UNLV stole two straight games, 9-5 and 7-4, and the Mountain West Conference title Saturday at Franklin Covey Field.

With the two losses, the Cougars fall to 39-19-1 on the season. UNLV improved to 34-27. The MWC Championship gives the Rebels an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals next week. BYU will find out if it earns an at-large bid on Monday.

UNLV jumped out to an early lead against BYU pitcher Matt Jensen. Jensen, who has been pitching very well lately, has been sick recently. The Rebels took advantage of the ailing Jensen, jumping out to a 2-0 first-inning lead. Zeke Parraz hit a RBI double and later scored on a single by Ryan Bird. UNLV scored again in the bottom of the third to go ahead 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, the Cougars stormed back to grab the lead. BYU got RBI base hits from Jeff Hiestand, Brandon Taylor and Kory Knell. Apana Nakayama led off the inning with a double and was followed by a single by Hiestand. Taylor tripled to knock in Hiestand. Ben Saylor grounded out to score Taylor. Knell then nailed a solo home run for BYU.

The lead was short-lived for the Cougars as UNLV responded in its side of the fourth inning to retake the lead. Matt Fry hit a two-run homer for the Rebels to go ahead 5-4.

UNLV never fell behind again, out scoring BYU 4-1 over the middle innings. The only run the Cougars managed was on a solo home run by Sean McNaughton in the top of the fifth inning. Rebels' reliever Matt Wagner shut the door on BYU, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Wagner only allowed one hit and got the Cougars to bounce into four double plays.

In game two, BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when McNaughton led the game off with a triple and scored on a Marcos Villezcas groundout.

The lead didn't hold long as UNLV scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Rebels sent nine batters to the plate in the inning.

BYU had a good chance to score runs in the top of the fourth when it loaded the bases with only one out. However, the Cougars were unable to score any runs. In the fifth, BYU again put runners on first and second with one out. The Cougars made the most of their opportunity in the fifth when Taylor roped a RBI single with two outs. Saylor followed with a two-run double to tie the game at four.

UNLV responded in its side of the fifth frame to take a 5-4 lead. The Rebels' run came on back-to-back doubles by Chris Bonnell and Bird. UNLV scored again in the sixth frame to widen its lead to 6-4.

The Cougars again squandered an excellent scoring opportunity in the seventh inning when they had runners on first and second base with nobody out. UNLV got a double play before BYU loaded the bases with two outs in the inning. Once again, the Cougars came up empty.

The Rebels added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Parraz to extend their lead to 7-4.

Kyle Tabeek pitched 2 1/3 innings to earn the save for UNLV.

After the tournament, three BYU players were honored on the All-Tournament team. Pitcher Dave Horlacher pitched a complete game on Friday in BYU's 7-2 victory over UNLV. Ryan Chambers homered twice and earned a save while Nakayama batted .615.

Tourney Begins Thursday for BYU

Image

Good news and bad news came out of last week's regular season finish at San Diego as BYU readies to play Thursday in the Mountain West Conference Tournament at Salt Lake City.

The good news: the Cougars earned the No. 2 seed with a solid second-place finish in the league and on Thursday will play the highest remaining seed out of Wednesday's tourney games at 11 a.m.

The bad news: outfielder Adrian Molina is out for the remainder of the season. The junior from San Diego received permission to remain behind from the team last week in order to participate in a family baptism. Molina suffered a broken hand in a car accident when he was knocked unconscious.

BYU, 37-17-1 overall and 21-9 in the MWC, finished two games behind first-place UNLV, who also received a first-round bye in this week's league tourney. The Cougars' starting pitcher for Thursday's game is TBA, depending on the opponent.

Lefty Lance Beus (2-1, 5.50) presents a number of problems for some opponents. Junior Dave Horlacher (5-2, 3.99) has been BYU's starter for the past 14 weekends. The Cougars have three pitchers each with six victories: Matt Jensen (6-1, 2.53), Justin Su'a (6-2, 4.89) and Blake Torgerson (6-2, 6.46).

This year's BYU team has been a part of 13 broken records on the national, league and school scene. Brandon Taylor has three of those records to his credit, Jensen has two, Horlacher, Molina and Casey Cloward each own a record and the Cougar team has set three records.

If BYU wins on Thursday, its next game would be Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. If the Cougars lose on Thursday morning, they would play again that night at 7 p.m. in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tourney.

The Cougars are hopeful of a good showing at the tourney. The tourney champion gets the league's automatic berth to next week's NCAA Regionals. BYU has submitted a bid to host one of those regionals starting next Thursday. If the Cougars falter in securing the automatic berth, they are hopeful their record is worthy of at at-large selection in tourney action that could start next Friday.

The Cougars have a 13-8 record in the MWC Tournament. BYU lost its first two games last year when the tourney was in Las Vegas; posted a 2-2 mark in 2003 at Albuquerque; won the tourney in 2002 in Provo; won the tourney in 2001 at San Diego; and had a 2-2 record in 2000 at Las Vegas.
