Cougars Soaked in Seattle

SEATTLE -- Ben Saylor had a home run for BYU but the rest was all Washington as the Cougars lost game three in the series Saturday, 12-1.

After going 0-for-7 in the first two games of the series, Saylor was one of the few Cougars who got into a groove on the rain-soaked afternoon hitting 2-for-4 with a single to go along with his homer.

Saylor helped BYU's cause in the top of the sixth when he drove an offering from Husky reliever Nick Hagadone deep into the fierce wind coming in from the outfield for his eighth round-tripper of the season. The run pulled the Cougars within five runs of Washington, 6-1.

BYU managed to get a runner in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings but couldn't score any of them as the Cougars struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against the Huskies. Rain and wind were the only constants for BYU on the afternoon as they fell to 15-20 on the season with the loss. With the win Washington improves to 24-14.

Brandon Christiansen (3-3, 7.09) kept BYU close through three and two-thirds innings, but either the rain or the Husky lineup was too much for the senior right-hander as he allowed five runs on six hits while striking out just one.

Washington settled in for some small ball early on the rainy day as it converted a sacrifice squeeze in the second and another in the bottom of the fourth while building a 6-0 lead after four complete.

Christiansen picked Anderson cheating off second in the inning on a quick move to the bag, but the Huskies kept coming as they sent eight men to the plate to push the score to 5-0 after four complete.

Washington's Zach Clem hit a homer, his 15th, into the wind in left to put the Huskies up 6-0. The Cougars held the Huskies for just the one run in the frame as Casey Nelson cut Ryan Anderson down on a steal attempt at second base with a pitchout.

Washington kept adding to its lead as it scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh to make the score 12-1.

BYU plays four games at Larry H. Miller Field next week with a Tuesday game against Utah Valley State before a three-game set against TCU on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Home Run-Hitting Huskies Host

Image

Washington, the nation's No. 3 home-run hitting team, hosts BYU in a three-game series starting Thursday.

The Huskies bring a 22-13 record into the non-conference game with the Cougars, who are now at 14-18. Washington has the Pac-10's leading home run hitter with 14 dingers and has 59 homers. BYU has a total of 22 homers this season, being led by Ben Saylor with seven.

BYU will start lefty Patrick Wells (3-4, 5.93) in Thursday night's opener of the three-game series against Tim Lincecum (7-2, 1.65) a junior righthander who has thrown 28.2 consecutive scoreless innings entering this week and the past three weeks has been named Pac-10 pitcher of the week. On Friday BYU will throw Jesse Craig (2-5, 3.65) and on Saturday the Cougar pitcher will be Brandon Christiansen (3-2, 6.85).

"I was pleased with the way we responded when they scored and w answered them back," said BYU Coach Vance Law of his team's Tuesday night victory at Utah Valley State College. "Our pitching staff did what we asked them to do. Saylor (Ben), Hiestand (Jeff), Banks (Stetson) and Johnson (Seth) caused havoc for UVSC."

Thursday and Friday's games begin at 6:30 p.m. PDT and Saturday's game begins at noon PDT.

BYU leads the all-time series with Washington, 12-6-1.

The Washington-BYU games will be carried live locally on KOVO Radio 960 AM with Brent Norton calling the play-by-play and will also be available for both live audio and livestats on the Internet www.byucougars.com.
