Sweep Puts Cougs in Third

Image

PROVO -- Stellar starting pitching and offensive firepower off the bat of Ben Saylor led BYU to a huge doubleheader sweep of New Mexico, 10-6 and 9-2 Friday night.

Jordan Muir and Jesse Craig each had impressive outings from the mound while Saylor went 2-for-4 in game one and 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs in the second of the twinbill. Saylor tallied a combined four RBI in the two games.

With the victories, the Cougars move above the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 24-23 (9-6 MWC) record. The wins also move BYU into a tie for third place in the Mountain West Conference with the Lobos (27-20, 9-6).

BYU head coach Vance Law was pleased with the effort of his team as the Cougars always had an answer for New Mexico's runs.

"I'm proud of the way we battled. We answered every time [New Mexico] scored," said Coach Law. "It's tough winning two in one day."

Ben Saylor loaded up the bases for the Cougars with no outs when he laid a perfect bunt down the third base line for a single in the bottom of the first. Two Lobo players waited for the ball to roll foul, but it never did and everyone was safe. However, BYU only managed one run in the inning on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff Hiestand.

After Seth Johnson walked to lead off the third inning, Marcos Villezcas executed the hit-and-run to perfection as he pulled a single through the right side to put runners on first and third with no outs and Saylor coming up to bat. Saylor produced a nearly identical hit through the right side, allowing Johnson to score from third and put BYU up 2-0. The Cougars extended the lead to 3-0 when Hiestand drove a sacrifice fly to center field.

UNM picked up its first run of the game when a single to shallow center by Chris Dabbs scored Foote from third. Foote had led off the inning with a single up the middle to break up Jordan Muir's no-hit bid before moving to third by swiping two bases. Muir picked up two strikeouts in the inning while keeping BYU ahead 3-1.

"It was admirable the way Muir pitched today," Law said. "He wasn't as sharp as he has been but he continued to compete tonight and never gave in to their hitters."

The Cougars bounced back with a run of their own when Stetson Banks led off the bottom of the fourth inning with an infield single before scoring on a hit-and-run double to left center field by Marcos Villezcas to take a 4-1 lead.

The Lobos added two runs to make the score 4-3 Cougars in the top of the fifth as they collected three base hits and a walk from Muir.

With one out in the fifth frame, BYU's Casey Nelson poked a 1-0 offering from the Lobo hurler through the right side for a single with the bases loaded, allowing both Hiestand and Kent Walton to score. The runs gave BYU a 6-3 cushion after five complete.

After Muir allowed runners to reach second and third with no outs in the seventh, southpaw reliever Jake Wortham came in to mop things up and immediately made an impact, striking out two straight Lobos hitters on a very nasty breaking ball. New Mexico's Drew McDonald wasn't quite as fooled as he crushed a Wortham offering over Johnson's head in center for a two-run double. The score through the visitor half of the seventh stood at 6-5, with the Cougars maintaining their lead.

BYU always seemed to have an answer for any Lobos' runs. In the Cougars' side of the seventh Blake Crosby doubled to deep left to score Austin Carter. Following Crosby, Nelson singled to left to move Crosby to third and bring up Stetson Banks who walked on four pitches to load the bases. With the bases loaded Johnson walked on four pitches to give BYU an 8-5 lead.

The Cougars added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by Walton and a deep RBI double by Daniel Vargas. The runs gave BYU a 10-5 lead going into the ninth.

Jake Wortham picked up the save after pitching three innings of relief, striking out five along the way.

BYU got on the board early in game two, jumping to 1-0 lead in the first inning. Villezcas and Saylor each picked up one-out singles. Villezcas scored when on a New Mexico throwing error.

Craig coasted through the early innings, shutting the Lobos out through the first three frames. In the fourth, New Mexico got a run on a fielder's choice by Ryan Barba in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.

The score remained tied at one until Carter came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and put a charge into a ball that just cleared the right field fence for his first career home run. The homer gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Saylor extended BYU's one-run lead to a three-run advantage with a towering home run to center. Villezcas, who walked on four pitches, also scored on the play.

The Lobos bounced back in the top of the sixth, cutting into the Cougars' lead. With two aboard, Barba got a RBI on single that just got past the diving Crosby. Craig did a good job at damage control as he recorded the final two outs with runners aboard to maintain a 4-2 BYU lead.

Saylor's second round-tripper came in the bottom of the seventh frame as he blasted a moon shot to deep right field. The solo shot, along with four runs in the bottom of the eighth were insurance runs the Cougars didn't need as Craig coasted through eight innings before giving way to Joshua Barrett to shut the door.

The doubleheader became necessary when rain forced a postponement of Thursday's game.

The Cougars will look to complete the sweep Saturday afternoon in the series finale. Fans can tune into KOVO 960 AM at 1 p.m. catch live radio coverage of the game. The game will also be televised live nationally on BYUTV and locally on KBYU-TV.

Eight Straight Home Games

Image

A four-game conference win-streak is what BYU's baseball team brings into the three-game series which starts with New Mexico on Thursday in Provo at 7 p.m.

The Cougars have a 22-23 overall record and a 7-6 league mark for fourth place in the Mountain West Conference, while UNM is in second place with a 9-4 record and 27-18 overall. The Lobos have lost their past five games, all in non-conference action on the heels of a pair of consecutive league victories over Utah.

The pitching matchups feature BYU freshman Jordan Muir (5-0, 2.25) against Nate Melek (5-5, 7.00) on Thursday, Cougar junior Jesse Craig (4-6, 4.38) against Jesse Perez (2-1, 8.42) on Friday at 7 p.m., and lefties Patrick Wells (5-4, 4.82) against Danny Ray Herrera (8-0, 2.26) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Saturday's game will be televised live by both KBYU-TV and nationally by BYUTV with Jay Monsen and Gary Sheide.

Two Cougars are ranked in this week's NCAA statistics: Ben Saylor is 16th in home runs, averaging 0.36 and he is ranked 47th in slugging percentage at 0.677. Muir is ranked 53rd in earned run average at 2.25. New Mexico is leading the nation in double plays at 1.31 and has six individuals ranked in the national statistics, among who are Chris Carlson, fith in home runs, ninth in RBI and 26th in slugging. Jordan Pacheco is fifth in runs scored.
