Tigers Win in Extra Innings

Image

MILLINGTON -- Despite Apana Nakayama knocking in two runs, BYU lost in 10 innings Thursday, 3-2, to the University of Memphis at the Service Academies Spring Classic.

Tigers' rightfielder Ben Grisham hit in the winning run in the top of the 10th for a 3-2 victory.

"It was one of those tough losses," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We gifted them two runs in the third and didn't execute in the seventh when (Steve) Parker led off with a triple. In the third we didn't turn a routine double play and missed on another double play at the plate. But I'm pleased with our effort and our pitching was outstanding."

Jesse Craig and BYU (3-3) got out of a tight jam in the first inning after loading the bases. Craig was able to force Memphis (1-1) shortstop Michael Murray to ground out to end the inning and keep the score 0-0.

In the third inning the Cougars found themselves in another jam and this time they weren't able to get out of it, as a fielding error and a lost opportunity for a double-play yielded two unearned runs to the Tigers, making the score 2-0.

The Cougars couldn't get anything going against pitcher Philip Utley, who retired the side in both the first and second innings. Finally in the bottom of the fourth, second baseman Kent Walton hit a triple off of him. Walton's triple extended his current hitting streak to 14 games dating back to last season.

Up next for BYU was Nakayama who hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to bring Walton around to score, making it 2-1 in favor of Memphis heading into the top of the fifth.

Craig then came up big for BYU in the fifth and sixth innings, retiring the side in the fifth, and striking out one and allowing just one hit in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars lead-off man center fielder Leon Johnson got on base after being hit by a pitch, and then promptly stole second to put himself in scoring position. After right fielder Jonathan Cluff popped out to center, Nakayama came up big again, hitting a double to left center to score Johnson and even things up at 2-2.

Craig was replaced in the seventh by righthander Matthew Jensen. Craig went six innings giving up four hits and no earned runs. Jensen came in the seventh and quickly retired the side sending it to the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, third baseman Steve Parker hit a lead-off triple to get things going, but BYU couldn't bring him around to score and the inning ended on a Dan Vargas groundout.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth with the score still 2-2, the Cougars' offense stalled sending it into extra innings.

Matt Yokley (1-0) picked up the win for Memphis, while Jensen (1-1) picked up the loss for BYU.

The Cougars' next game will be Friday at 1 p.m. (CST) against Missouri. Sophomore southpaw Jake Wortham (0-1, 8.31) will start the game for BYU.

Following the BYU-Missouri game, the Cougars will then present a fireside at a local chapel in Tennessee where Leon Johnson, J.D. Stambaugh and Jacob Perez will be speaking.

Tourney Time in Tennessee

Image

Baseball teams from the Big 12, Conference USA, and Mid American conferences face BYU in Tennessee this week at the annual Service Academies Spring Classic.

The Cougars' opening game will be against nearby University Memphis on Thursday, in at the tourney site in Millington, Tenn. Memphis and Akron are starting its seasons this week, while Missouri brings a 5-2 record into the Classic and BYU is 3-2.

Senior righthander Jesse Craig (0-2. 6.10) will start Thursday's game at 3 p.m. (CST) as he maintains his Thursday-Tuesday-Saturday regimen. Sophomore southpaw Jake Wortham (0-1, 8.31) is scheduled to throw for the Cougars against Missouri on Friday at 1 p.m. Jordan Muir, also a sophomore, (2-0, 3.09) will pitch for BYU in Saturday's contest at 10 a.m., as the righthander seeks for his eighth victory against no losses in his college career.

Craig is one of three seniors on a team that has 13 freshmen.

"We are just young and need to gain some confidence," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We have not been swinging the bats like I know we can."

One bat that remains consistent for BYU is sophomore Kent Walton, who now has a 13-game hitting streak, a string that started last season.

The Cougars do not play the U.S. Air Force or Naval Academies, who are also in the tournament. Tournament games will have livestats. and one live audiocast available through links on www.byucougars.com.

Following the Tennessee tourney, BYU returns to Provo to open its home baseball season next week with a three-game series against Northern Colorado.
