Hornets End Four-Game Streak

Image

SACRAMENTO -- Jordan Muir and Sean McNaughton came through at clutch times as BYU defeated San Jose State, 3-2, in the opening round Thursday morning.

That was the first game of a split doubleheader, with the difference being like day and night at the River City Classic. The Cougars then fell 16-2 later in the day to co-host Sacramento State, ending a four-game win streak for BYU.

Against San Jose State, Muir struck out seven in eight innings, including two in the second. Muir, now 1-1, worked out of a first-inning jam with the bases loaded as the Spartans stranded at least one runner in each of the first five innings.

Cougar Andrew Law hit a two-out single in the third and was homered in by Sean McNaughton to put BYU up, 2-1. It was McNaughton's first homer of the season.

McNaughton led off the sixth with a single and advanced to third on Brandon Relf's single. McNaughton then scored when Kent Walton hit into his second double play of the game, putting BYU on top 3-2.

Walton's hitting streak ended at 15 games as he popped up in his only other at bat against the Spartans. Walton recorded a single late in the Sac State game.

Against SJSU, J.T. Musso spelled Chad Nacapoy at catcher in the eighth and Blake Torgerson worked for the save in the ninth. Musso threw out a Spartan runner in the ninth for out number two.

The win over SJSU evened BYU's record at 5-5, while the Spartans dropped to 6-3.

Hours later in the nightcap, BYU was stagnant as it allowed Sacramento State to score 12 runs in the seventh inning of a 16-2 blowout.

The Hornets improved to 2-5, while BYU readies to face nearby Utah Valley University in the Sacramento tourney on Friday morning.

Six Games in Five Days

Image

Pacific and BYU bring identical 2-5 records into Tuesday's game between the two baseball teams at Stockton, Calif.

The Cougars and Tigers square off again on Wednesday. Both of these games begin at 6 p.m. PT.

"We are swinging the bats well, but our pitchers haven't done as well and I know they will," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "With the experience we are getting, nothing but better performances will come."

The probable BYU pitchers against Pacific are Jake Wortham (0-1, 9.00) and Tyler Westensee (0-0, 13.50).

After the pair of games at Pacific, the Cougars bus to Sacramento to start the fifth annual River City Classic co-hosted by Cal State Sacramento and UC Davis, a tournament in which BYU first played in 2006.

The likely Cougar rotation on the mound will be a Thursday doubleheader vs. San Jose State with Jordan Muir (0-1, 3.75) at 10 a.m. and vs. Sacramento State with Nelson Castleberry (0-1,10.80) at 2 p.m. On Friday Sean Amerson (0-0, 10.80) is scheduled to face Utah Valley at10 a.m. And Wortham closes the week for BYU at UC Davis at 10 a.m.

Sac State (1-5) has former BYU third baseman Blake Crosby starting as its shortstop. The rest of teams in the tourney had the following records at the start of the week: San Jose State 5-2; UC Davis 6-3, after sweeping Utah last week; and Utah Valley 1-6-1; but all play again before the tourney begins. BYU does not play Portland in the tourney as does the rest of the field, but the Cougars opened the season with the Pilots and won one of three.

The Cougars are scheduled to also speak at a Friday night fireside in Sacramento.

Livestats and/or live audio for coverage on the Internet of all of this week's games can be found via links through www.byucougars.com.
