SAN -- In windy conditions host San Diego State defeated BYU, 13-6, on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep over the Cougars.
A three-run homer by Nick Romero in the first inning put SDSU on top in the beginning for the first time in the series.
Romero accounted for two more RBI in the second inning to put the Aztecs up 5-0.
J.T. Musso hit a one-out double in the third to give BYU its first base runner of the game, but he made a running mistake on Kiko Hermosillo's fielder's choice and was thrown out.
The Aztecs chased freshman pitcher Tyler Westensee out of the game with a lead-off triple in the third, tallying six more runs to put them up 11-0.
The Cougars had runners on the corners in the fifth with two outs, but couldn't produce.
"The game appeared to be over after the third inning, but we made a ball-game of it even though it was a disappointing defeat," said BYU coach Vance Law. "It was a perfect opportunity to get experience for guys who don't play a whole lot and I was pleased with the way they performed."
BYU finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Kent Walton tripled with one out, the first of four consecutive hits for BYU, which turned into a pair of runs.
Cougar reserve Thomas Bills hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh to help close the gap to 13-6. SDSU is now 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference.
The Cougars, now 7-10 overall and 0-3 in the MWC, are next in action on Tuesday and Wednesday when they hosts Kansas State in a games broadcast live locally over 1400 AM KSRR Radio. The BYU-KSU series starts seven consecutive home games for the Cougars, a first for the month of March in Provo.
