SALT LAKE -- A sweep over Utah and winning the Deseret First Duel baseball portion for the second year in a row resulted from BYU’s doubleheader victories Saturday, 12-7 and 3-2.
The Cougars, now 23-15 overall and 10-5 in the Mountain West Conference, got two more pitching saves in the doubleheader, the last of which was by Jordan Muir. Muir, who got a save Friday night as well, tied the school record with his ninth save in the nightcap.
Muir faced four Utes in the ninth, striking out the final batter to tie the 1992 record set by former Major Leaguer Ryan Hancock of BYU quarterback fame.
“He (Muir) has been outstanding, a real rock,” said coach Vance Law. “He has a great attitude and a great deal of confidence.”
Utah was cut short in the eighth of the nightcap when third baseman Steve Parker nailed a great peg at home to catcher Bryce Ayoso on Gavin Green, who had tripled and stopped at third on a possible inside the park homer.
Muir was set up for the save when the Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth. Behind 2-1 after playing lethargically for eight innings, BYU donned rally caps and delivered. First it was Kasey Ko with a one-out walk. Ko was replaced by pinch runner Adam Law, who advanced on an Ayoso sac bunt. Adam’s older brother, Andrew Law then stroked a single to right center.
“He (Greg Krause) threw me a slider that broke over the middle of the plate and I was able to slap it into play,” said Andrew who enabled Adam to score the tying run. Andrew then scored the winning run when Sean McNaughton singled to left field.
“I was pleased that Andrew came through in a clutch situation and hit the ball the way he should,” said Coach Law. “I’m pleased with our bench and the way they worked hard, too. It was a sweet victory for us as Utah is a real challenge. They are a snake bit.”
In terms of aggregate production, Utah out-hit the Cougars in the doubleheader, 27-25. And Jordan Whatcott, the Ute starter in game three, struck out 10 Cougars. Plus Ute catcher C.J. Cron hit a pair of homers in game one of the doubleheader.
Home runs in Saturday’s first game by Parker and Ko punctuated the third inning as BYU took a 5-0 lead. Parker hit a solo shot to left, while Ko’s was a three-run poke to right field.
Utah hung a five spot in the fifth to tie the score as it got homers from Nick Kuroczko and Cron.
BYU took a 6-5 lead when Ko doubled to deep centerfield to drive in Michael Bowen, who had walked in the fifth. That lead was preserved by a couple of Cougar defensive gems in the sixth as aggressive base running cost the Utes.
Cron tied the game in the seventh with his second consecutive homer in as many at bats.
Chad Nacapoy’s two-run blast over the leftfield fence put the Cougars ahead 8-6 in the seventh for the eventual game-winning RBI.
With bases loaded for Utah in that first game, the Cougars brought in their second reliever of the inning in the eighth as Jared Miller struck out a hot Kuroczko to keep an 8-6 lead.
The Utes fall to 13-21 overall and 3-12 in the MWC. BYU now readies to host New Mexico in a three-game series starting Thursday.

The baseball portion of the Deseret Duel will be in its finale this week with a three-game series between BYU and Utah starting on Friday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
BYU, 20-15 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference, meets Utah, 13-18 and 3-9 on Friday at 6 p.m., with Jeremy Toole (5-2, 3.59) on the mound for BYU. On Saturday Blake Torgerson (4-2, 5.62) is on the hill for the Cougars at 1 p.m. In the nightcap, BYU's starter will be Adam Miller (3-2, 3.86) in a game starting at 5 p.m.
This will be the final regular season games against Utah for eight BYU seniors. The games will be broadcast live over KSRR Radio (1400 AM) and can also be heard live on the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
This year Utah leads in the overall Deseret Duel standings, 39.5 to 20. BYU has a 2-1 lead in the baseball portion of the standings from games played earlier
this year and leads in the run differential, should that factor be needed as a
tiebreaker, currently at a combined 28-19.
