STILLWATER -- No. 13 Oklahoma State broke a 1-1 deadlock Saturday night in its Chick-fil-A Classic to secure a 5-4 victory over BYU’s baseball team.
Thanks to a federal court ruling last week, OSU benefited from having lefthander Andy Oliver on the mound. Oliver is rumored to be a first-round pick in this year’s draft for the Cowboys who improved to 3-0, while BYU fell to 1-3.
BYU countered with junior transfer pitcher Jeremy Toole who held OSU hitless until the fifth. The fifth was trouble for Toole, who who surrendered four runs from five walks and a pair of base hits as OSU took a 5-1 lead.
BYU got one of those runs back when Sean McNaughton hit his second homer of the weekend with a swat over the leftfield fence in the sixth. The Cougars closed the gape to 5-3 in the seventh when it manufactured a run by Jonathan Cluff off Oliver’s reliever, Thomas Keeling.
Michael Bowen got BYU’s fourth run when he ran the bases well to secure a double and scored off Bryce Ayoso’s second hit of the night in the ninth.
The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and protected it with Oliver striking out seven Cougars before BYU could score.
The Cougars tied the score in the third when lead-off batter Ayoso drew a walk, advanced to second on Stetson Banks’ bunt single. Ayoso advanced to third on a sac bunt by McNaughton and scored on Andrew Law’s bunt single.
Banks ended up at third and tried to score when Law broke for second. The throw came back in time to catch Banks trying to get past the block at home to end the third inning.
The BYU nightcap was a better performance than its 20-6 loss earlier in the day to Manhattan College.
The Cougars came out on the short end of a scoring opportunity in the first inning of that Manhattan game when McNaughton tried to score off Law’s double.
McNaughton tripled in the sixth to drive in a run before the Jaspers went on a 10-run rally in the bottom of that frame.
"I am disappointed we didn't play better," said BYU coach Vance Law. "Our defense was shoddy. We had opportunities to win three games and didn't come up with a big hit when we needed it.
"I am encouraged. I saw a lot of good things. We are going to be outstanding offensively."
The Cougars now travel to meet Baylor in Waco, Texas in a Monday evening game.

Friday is the season opener for BYU’s baseball team as it has a pair of doubleheaders in series at Stillwater, Okla.
The Cougars, who were 22-36 last season, return all starters as they face Manhattan College (31-20-1 in 2008) on Friday at 1 p.m., CDT, before tangling with host Oklahoma State (44-18) in a game starting at 4 p.m., CDT.
On Saturday, BYU has a rematch with the Jaspers at noon (CDT) and then close this portion of the road trip in a 6:30 p.m. (CDT) contest with OSU, ranked No. 13 by USA Today/ESPN, No. 14 Collegiate Baseball and No. 16 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
On Monday, BYU travels to Texas for an evening game at Waco against No. 8 (Baseball America) Baylor University (No. 15 Collegiate Baseball, No. 17 USA Today/ESPN and No. 19 NCBWA).
Seniors Jordan Muir (2-6, 6.81) and Jake Wortham (4-6, 6.90), a southpaw, are BYU’s probable starting pitchers on Friday against Manhattan and the Cowboys, respectively. On Saturday, juniors Blake Torgerson (6-5, 5.68) and Jeremy Toole (2-1, 4.42), a JC transfer, face the Jaspers and OSU in that order on the mound.
“We had a chance to play a couple of good schools,” said BYU coach Vance Law in explanation of this unique Oklahoma-Texas trip. “I hope our guys are not intimidated. We are very good offensively and while our pitching remains to be seen, I think we are good there as well.”
