DAVIS -- Victory at last for BYU’s baseball team came with a 10-2 defeat in the nightcap Thursday over UC Davis.

The Cougars, now 1-4, split a doubleheader with the Aggies, 4-3, with UC Davis winning 3-0 to start the day.

The Cougars may not have long to savor the victory before taking the field again. Friday’s regularly scheduled game was bumped up to make Thursday a doubleheader. However, Saturday’s game has been moved up to Friday for a possible start at 2 p.m., or earlier, depending on the weather.

“It was nice to get the first win under your belt, but I am a little disappointed we didn’t win the first game, “ said BYU coach Vance Law. “I don’t anticipate ever getting shut out with the bats we have. I was pleased the entire day with our pitching staff. We showed some real fight and competed well.

“Any time you can hold a team under three runs or lower you should win. It was the pitching that came through. Matt Neil got out of a couple jams and every guy we brought out of the bullpen threw really well.”

In that victory, BYU got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Brandon Relf singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jonathan Cluff doubled down the leftfield line to score Relf.

Relf returned the favor in the second when he singled down the rightfield line to score Andrew Law and reclaim the lead, 2-1. That single extended his hitting streak to six games, dating back to last season. Alex Wolfe hit a two-run, two-out double to left field, scoring Relf from first and Sean McNaughton from third.

Law hit a two-out triple to right-center and scored on a double steal in the third as Chase Frampton advanced to second. BYU had six stolen bases in the win, three by Law.

McNaughton struck out in the fourth, but got aboard from a wild pitch on that play. McNaughton then stole second and third, then scored on a passed ball. Then Cluff’s one-out leftfield double drove in Wolfe to make the score 7-1 and chased the Aggie pitcher from the mound.

Chase Frampton walked in the fifth and scored off Stephen Wells’ one-out triple to make the score 8-2. Wells then scored on a wild pitch when McNaughton struck out. Law was injured in the fifth on a stolen base attempt.

“He has a pulled hamstring,” said Coach Law of his son Andrew. “It is a big blow because of the speed he brings.”

Relf led off with a walk in the eighth and scored BYU’s 10th run off a Wes Guenther single to center.

The 3-0 shutout was the first time the Cougars had been blanked since the final game of 2008 in a 1-0 loss to San Diego State at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Texas.

This weekend another three-game series in California will add to the growth of BYU’s baseball team as it takes on UC Davis.

On Thursday the Cougars, now 0-3, will now play a doubleheader because of forecasted weather issues on Friday. Originally there was supposed to be a game on Friday, but the schedule was changed late Tuesday.

BYU will again start with junior Justin Shutt (0-1, 13.50) on the mound. The starter has been changed in the rotation for game two, as sophomore Matt Neil (0-0, 0.00) takes the hill in the second game on Thursday. Freshman Chunner Nyberg (0-1, 19.64) remains in the role as the game-three starter on Saturday.

“We are still getting our feet wet with our younger players getting experience and learning,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “I like the way we swung the bats and competed well. We just needed some key outs.”

Neil leads the Mountain West Conference in opposing batting average at .158 in 5.1 innings of relief and in fewest hits allowed, three. Teammate Alex Wolfe leads the MWC in doubles with three and the Cougars lead the league with nine doubles.

The Cougars lost three games last weekend at UC Riverside in their first outdoor action of the season. This week BYU has been able to have its first full practices outdoors.
