Walk-Off Single Aids Lobos

Image

ALBUQUERQUE -- New Mexico got a bases loaded walk-off single Saturday afternoon to claim a 10-9 victory over BYU.

The Cougars, now 14-16 overall and 4-5 in the Mountain West Conference, forced UNM into pressure situations, battling back from a 5-1 deficit and tying the game twice, including nine-all in the top of the ninth.

The Lobos also tied the game twice, lastly at at 8-8, then took a one-run lead into the ninth. BYU tied the score in the ninth when Sean McNaughton singled and Alex Hancock came in as a pinch runner. With two out, Jonathan Cluff tripled to tie the score at nine-all.

BYU first got on the scoreboard when Austin Hall led off with a single in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly after advancing two bases on errors by the Lobos, making it 3-1 in favor of New Mexico. Brandon Relf then tripled down the leftfield line, but was stranded.

McNaughton hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to bring the Cougars within two, 5-3. It was McNaughton’s third consecutive homer in as many games. When Hall singled in Cluff, that brought the hook out for UNM pitcher Wally Kessler as the score narrowed to 5-4. Stephen Wells hit a two-run single to give BYU its first lead at 6-5.

A home run by Rafael Neda and a Lobo double knocked Chris Capper off the mound for the Cougars with the score tied six-all in the bottom of the sixth.

Dane Nielsen led off with a homer in the seventh to give BYU a 7-6 advantage.

The Cougars now ready for a two-game non-conference series with Kansas State at Larry H. Miller Field starting Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
