NATCHITOCHES -- Taylor Cole and Mark Anderson pitched well for BYU as the Cougars split a doubleheader Saturday, winning 19-1 and falling 4-1 to Northwestern State.
Both sophomore hurlers started, but only Cole emerged victorious as the BYU finished the weekend with a 1-2 record compared to 2-1 for the Demons.
“We had some positives, particularly in the first game today,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our approach at the plate was excellent in that game because we went for line drives. We pitched very well in both games with Taylor Cole and Mark Anderson being outstanding as well as our relievers Matthew Neil, Daniel Sechrest and Blake Torgerson.”
Cole, a transfer who had not pitched in two years because of a Church mission, scattered four hits in five innings for the victory in the 19-1 win. When he left the game, BYU had a 4-0 lead.
Two extra base hits helped Cole in the fourth inning when Austin Hall led off with a double and scored off Kelton Caldwell’s home run.
Neil and Sechrest recorded three scoreless innings between them, while the Cougar batters went to work, especially in the eighth inning on the heels of an 8-0 lead.
In the 11-run eighth inning, freshmen Dillon Robinson and Jaycob Brugman started it off with a leadoff double and a run-scoring single, respectively. Robinson scored twice in that inning.
In the nightcap, BYU took a 1-0 lead when Andrew Law led off with a single in the fourth, advanced to third on Alex Wolfe’s single to right and scored on Austin Hall’s one-out single.
Left-hander Anderson threw a one-hitter in seven complete innings before being replaced by Justin Shutt on the mound. In the third inning Jordan Buckley hit a two-out single to Anderson.
The Cougar lead vanished in the seventh when the Demons tied the score. NSU scored three runs in the eighth to take a 4-1 lead.
“We had too many strikeouts in the second game and didn’t make good adjustments. I see we have great potential and we are trying to address the fact that a regional berth depends on each game we play. These were three games we could have won.”
Wolfe and Hall continued to keep their current hitting streaks alive at 15 games apiece.
BYU now readies for four games at the Brooks Wallace Classic starting on Thursday with games against host Texas Tech and Northern Illinois.

Sophomores pitchers Chris Capper, Taylor Cole and Mark Anderson get the starting nod for BYU’s season openers this weekend at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La.
Righthanders Capper (4-2, 2.80) and Cole (10-3, 1.37 in 2008 at the College of Southern Nevada) will be BYU’s pitchers in Friday and Saturday’s games at 6:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. CT, respectively. Southpaw Anderson (3-1, 6.14) will be the starter in Saturday’s second game of the doubleheader.
“This is the best pitching staff I’ve had in my 12 years,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We have 10 solid guys.”
The twice-drafted transfer Cole was the 2008 Scenic West Conference Pitcher of the Year prior to serving a Church mission to Canada.
“We are tired of practicing against one another and are ready to go, well prepared and hope we get off to a good start,” said Law.
Northwestern State was 36-21 last season and returns 18 lettermen, including starters at the infield corners. BYU was 27-31 last year and returns 21 lettermen, including players who have started in all positions with the exception of freshmen outfielders Kelton Caldwell and Jaycob Brugman at left and right fields.
Caldwell and Brugman are two of a possible seven left-handed batters that could appear in the starting lineup.
“Having all of these left-handers is a bonus until we face a tough lefty,” Law said.
Fans can view livestats of all three games through links on www.byucougars.com.
This is BYU baseball’s first time playing in the state of Louisiana. The Cougars beat S.W. Louisiana in 1984 (5-4) at the Best in the West Classic in Fresno, Calif.
Following the trip to Louisiana, the Cougars return home to prepare for the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Texas Tech University next week.
