LUBBOCK -- When BYU’s baseball team watched a recording at its hotel Saturday of the Cougar men’s basketball victory, it had just beaten Northern Illinois, 8-5.

The Cougar baseball team, now 4-3, didn’t know the outcome of the BYU-San Diego State basketball game, but they continued celebrating from their own game played at the same time.

That celebration started earlier in the day with a repeat victory over NIU in the Brooks Wallace Classic. BYU concluded the Classic with a 3-1 record, including the 3-2 victory over NIU on Friday.

“Our guys continued to play hard the whole game,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We wanted to get some work in for our pitchers. We walked fewer batters. (Stephen) Wells made a nice throw to get the lead runner at third to eliminate men on the corners.”

Stephen Wells made that play in the bottom of the first, ironically after scoring BYU’s first run in the top of that inning. Wells, a centerfielder, threw out NIU’s Jamison Wells at third base.

The Cougars went on to build a 4-1 lead, which evaporated in the sixth inning when the Huskies tied the game five-all.

Then in the eighth, BYU’s Austin Hall secured the game-winning RBI.

“(Alex)Wolfe had a double to start us that inning and then we got a huge triple by Hall to left-centerfield after we lost a three-run lead,” said Law. “To get those three big runs was important.”

Hall’s triple scored Wolfe and Bret Lopez. Hall scored when Kelton Caldwell hit a one-out double and gave BYU its 8-5 margin.

BYU closed the game with a double play on an interference ruling by the umpire when the NIU runner slide outside the base line.

The Cougars next play on Thursday to start a three-game series at Washington.

Host Texas Tech is 4-0, Northern Illinois is 0-2 and BYU’s baseball team is in between at 1-2 going into this week’s Brooks Wallace Classic at Lubbock, Texas.

“We are hoping to see changes in some of our performances,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our staff pitched well enough last week, but we need better offensive approaches to utilize our talents.”

On the mound for Thursday evening’s opener for the Cougars will be right-hander Chris Capper (0-0, 12.27). Friday’s doubleheader begins at noon with Taylor Cole (1-0, 0.00) on the mound against Northern Illinois, followed by Matthew Neil (0-0, 0.00) in the nightcap rematch against Texas Tech. Saturday’s starter vs. Northern Illinois will be southpaw Mark Anderson (0-0, 1.29).

For the second week in a row BYU will be on artificial turf. The Cougars practiced indoors on Monday and outdoors Tuesday before leaving for Texas.

Austin Hall and Alex Wolfe lead the team with current 15-game hitting streaks. Andrew Law has a current eight-game hitting streak.
