Four Freshmen Help Deflate Dogs

SEATTLE -- Coming from behind twice Friday, BYU’s baseball team used a five-run rally in the ninth inning to claim a 9-6 victory over Washington.

Four freshmen came up big for BYU, now 6-3, including winning relief pitcher Kolton Mahoney grabbing his first victory of the season.

"We kept battling through at bats," said BYU coach Vance Law. "Taylor Cole didn't have his best stuff, but he was able to keep us close. We got clutch hits from (Jaycob) Brugman, (Stephen) Wells and Dillon Robinson, who gave us the early lead. It was a constant drizzle and sometimes a downpour of rain."

Down 2-0 and 4-3, Cougar freshman Jaycob Brugman hit a one-out double to score pinchrunner Alex Hancock as BYU took a 5-4 lead in that ninth frame with fellow freshman Kelton Caldwell advancing to third.

Washington native Stephen Wells then doubled in Caldwell and Brugman in that final stanza to extend his hitting streak to six games with the game-winning RBI and put the Cougars up 7-4. Andrew Law then singled in Wells and in turn scored on Ryan Bernal’s single.

Dane Nielsen got BYU’s first hit of the day in the third inning with a one-out double.

Alex Wolfe hit a one-out single in front of the centerfielder, followed by Bernal’s double, to the rightfield corner with Wolfe holding at third in the fourth. Freshman Dillon Robinson then belted a three-run homer to right to give BYU a 3-2 lead.

BYU starter Taylor Cole was replaced by lefty Jared Miller in the seventh when Washington regained the lead off a wild pitch and an RBI single with two outs.

BYU was retired in order in the second, fifth and sixth innings. The Huskies went down in order in the fifth.

The Cougars loaded the bases on three walks and Jaycob Brugman tied the score four-all in the eighth on Bernal’s single, but Andrew Law was out at the plate when the throw arrived on time.

The two teams conclude the three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

Washington Starts Northwest Series

Image

Artificial turf for the third straight week is the forage for BYU’s baseball team as it starts a three-game series at Washington on Thursday.

The Cougars, above .500 for the first time this year at 4-3, play Thursday and Friday nights at Washington, 1-5, concluding the series on Saturday afternoon.

Washington native Stephen Wells leads BYU’s team with a current four-game hitting streak and has one of the hottest bats, raising his average from .214 to .364. Wells, a centerfielder, was one of five teammates named to the all-tournament team last week in Texas. The other Cougars named to that honor were infielders Andrew Law and Ryan Bernal, and pitchers Matthew Neil and Taylor Cole.

Cole is scheduled to start Friday’s game and has a perfect 2-0 record with a 0.00 earned run average in 12 innings. Thursday’s starter is Chris Capper (0-1, 8.00) and southpaw Mark Anderson (1-0, 2.25) gets the nod for Saturday afternoon.

“We have had solid pitching, our hitters are going to continue to come around and I’m pleased we are playing hard,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We had limited practices this week because we are trying to get ahead in school with the long road trip.”

The Cougars remain in the Northwest following the Washington series for games at Portland and the University of Oregon next week.
