Late Surge Not Enough as Cougars Fall

Image

PROVO, Utah -- Six runs in the final two innings were too little too late as the BYU baseball team (20-19, 7-8) fell 12-6 to No. 7 TCU (30-13, 13-2) Thursday at Larry H. Miller Field.

"I think we faced a big league pitcher tonight," said BYU head coach Vance Law of TCU pitcher Kyle Winkler. "He is a very good pitcher and bouncing back in the last two innings was big for us."

Jaycob Brugman, a freshman from Phoenix, extended his Cougar-best hitting streak to three games and, in the process, brought to his team-leading RBI total to 28.

In his 11th appearance of the season, sophomore Taylor Cole started strong, holding TCU hitless through the first three innings. However, the Cougars were only able to manage one hit during that stretch, as Horned Frog right-hander Kyle Winkler struck out six of the first nine Cougars he faced.

Winkler struck out 13 and walked one in 7 innings of work for the Horned Frogs.

TCU drew first blood in the top of the fourth, posting two runs on three hits to take the first lead.

BYU threatened in the bottom half of the fourth after a double by designated hitter Ryan Bernal put two runners in scoring position. The Cougars were unable to capitalize, however and surrendered six runs in the top of the fifth to go down 8-0.

Bernal, who leads the Cougars in hitting, went 2-for-5 and added his 20th RBI of the season.

Despite giving up four more runs in the sixth, the Cougars would not go quietly. RBI singles by Brugman and Bernal put BYU on the board and made the score 12-2 and third baseman Dillon Robinson gave the Cougars two more with a two-out, two-RBI double off the wall. A TCU error allowed one more run to cross and make the score 12-5 after eight complete.

In his 13th appearance, senior reliever Jared Miller struck out the side in the top of the ninth before BYU added one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Game two of the three-game series starts Friday at 6 p.m. at Larry H. Miller Field. Sophomore Chris Capper (3-2, 3.65) is projected to start on the mound for the Cougars.

Hosting No. 7 TCU; Neil Nat`l Pitcher of Week

Image

No. 7 TCU starts a three-game series Thursday evening against BYU’s baseball team.

TCU, now 29-13 overall, is in first place of the Mountain West Conference with a 13-2 mark, while BYU is 20-18 and 7-7.

At least once during the series BYU senior Matthew Neil (4-2, 1.75) should make an appearance. Neil was named national pitcher of the week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com for two victories while tossing 11 scoreless innings last week. Neil pitched the final two frames in an 11-inning 7-6 win over Utah on Tuesday, striking out four of the six he faced. Neil had a complete-game 1-0 shutout on Saturday against New Mexico. He allowed six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. CLICK HERE to see their site.

The probable starting rotation for BYU will be Taylor Cole (3-3, 2.98) and Chris Capper (3-2, 3.65) on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m., respectively.

On Thursday at 5 p.m., former BYU football players like Bryan Kehl, Dallas Reynolds and Fahu Tahi, all currently in the NFL, will be signing autographs and taking photos with fans. They will also throw out the first pitch.

On Friday at 5 p.m., current BYU football players like Ross Apo and Jordan Pendleton will be at Miller Park signing autographs and taking photos with fans. They will also throw out the first pitch.

On Saturday, BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall will sign autographs and take photos with fans prior to the game at 1 p.m. and he will also throw out the first pitch.

All three games will be televised live by BYUtv and broadcast live locally over Radio 960 AM/92.9 FM. At the same time as the Cougar baseball games versus TCU, BYU softball hosts San Diego State and UNLV.
