SAN DIEGO -- Matthew Neil twirled a three-hitter and Jaycob Brugman was a triple shy of the cycle Saturday afternoon in BYU's 9-3 victory over San Diego State.
Neil, a senior from Arizona, walked only one and struck out eight in seven innings, retiring the side in order in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Having led once in each of the past two games at San Diego, the Cougars were able to sustain the lead they started in the third inning.
Brugman, a freshman from Arizona, doubled in the third to right field, scoring Stephen Wells for the first run, then scored himself from Ryan Bernal's single to right field, giving BYU a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Bret Lopez led off with a triple to center field, then scored on Andrew Law's single past the shortstop. Law scored off Dane Nielsen's single up the middle, then Brugman homered off the top of the wall beyond right field, all with no outs, as BYU took a 6-1 lead.
Brugman continued his slugging in the two-run sixth with a double down the left-field line which scored Nielsen. Nielsen had doubled earlier in the inning down the right-field line to score Law.
BYU scored its ninth run when Austin Hall led off by beating out a bunt to the pitcher. Hall stole second, then scored on Wells single to the left side.
“Matthew Neil pitched extremely well and we had a solid day defensively,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “It was nice to be able to have our offense relax with Matthew turning it around from his outing earlier in the week.
BYU, now 26-24 overall and 8-11 in the Mountain West Conference, will return to San Diego in two weeks following a four-game series starting Thursday at the Air Force Academy.

A three-game series starting Thursday at San Diego State marks the first time this month for BYU’s baseball team to play a league game.
The Cougars, now 25-23 and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference, return to league play after seven-consecutive non-MWC games produced a record of 5-2, including an upset at No. 6 Arizona State.
BYU closed out its home season with a record of 11-6 and now readies for seven straight road games to close out the regular season before they return to San Diego for the MWC Tournament the end of May.
SDSU, now 17-32 and 7-11, will face three Cougar right-handers as starters on the mound this weekend. Sophomores Chris Capper (3-3, 3.77) and Taylor Cole (4-4, 3.45) will start Thursday and Friday’s games at 6 p.m. PT, respectively. On Saturday BYU will start Matthew Neil (4-4, 2.22) in the game at 1 p.m. PT.
“Being at home and having the win at Arizona State really pumped us up,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our players started to believe what us coaches have been telling them all year long.”
The BYU-SDSU series will be broadcast live locally on Radio 960 AM, 1280 AM and 104.7 FM as well as on the Internet through BYU Radio.
