Lobos Win In 11 Innings

Image

SAN DIEGO -- New Mexico got the last breaks over BYU Tuesday, winning 5-4 in 11 innings to open the Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament.

Six double plays turned by the Cougars looked to be an advantage, but a key pinch-hit home run in the ninth by Lobo Jacob Nelson and a game-winning single with one out by Trey Porras in the 11th secured the UNM victory.

BYU, now 29-26 overall, led twice in regulation, taking an initial 1-0 lead in the first and a 3-1 lead in the sixth. A gap RBI double by DJ Peterson tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth.

The Cougars escaped further damage in the fourth when Alex Wolfe held on as he was bowled over at the plate to help Jaycob Brugman turn the first of his two double plays in the game from right field.

Brugman turned his second double play, his fourth of the year, in the sixth when he closed the sixth inning on a fly-out to right field and threw to first base to tag out Luke Campbell. That double play along with ones in the first and second set the Lobos down in order those innings. First baseman Austin Hall was on the tail end of five of those double plays.

Hall also hit a one-out RBI double to score an alert Ryan Bernal to give BYU a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Hall scored after stealing third and worrying off-speed pitcher Rudy Jaramillo so that Wolfe doubled, giving Cougars consecutive two-baggers and a 3-1 lead.

BYU never led after that point, but did get a 4-4 tie in the ninth when Dane Nielsen singled in pinch-hitter Alex Hancock in the ninth to force extra innings.

BYU starter Matthew Neil was effective through eight innings, walking none.

“We are really disappointed not to come out with a win,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “The pitchers from both sides fought well, but we were not able to come up with the big hits with two outs. That’s the way baseball is sometimes, the breaks went New Mexico’s way.

We `burned’ a couple of our pitchers and have a rough road ahead, but it can be done because we have enough pitching depth. Our defense was great with a couple of heads up plays. We will bounce back and be ready.”

BYU will start Las Vegas righthander Taylor Cole (4-5, 3.15) against UNLV in Wednesday morning's game which begins at 11 a.m. PT.

Opening With Lobos in MWC Tourney

Image

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU baseball team [29-25, 11-12] opens play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament Tuesday against New Mexico [16-39, 10-14) at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, California.

In conjunction with the start of the tournament, Jaycob Brugman and Matthew Neil received 2011 All-MWC honors. Brugman was named a first-team outfielder and freshman of the year while Neil was one of four starting pitchers named to the second team.

Brugman led the Cougars in hitting with a .339 batting average in 2011, while adding nine home runs, 18 doubles and 47 RBI.

After posting a 6-4 recording with a 2.22 ERA during the regular season, Neil is slated to start against the No. 6 seeded Lobos, with opening pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.

"We haven't been hitting balls on the button the way we are capable of doing," said BYU coach Vance Law. "New Mexico is a good team that competes well. I'm guessing they will throw Jaramillo who was effective against us. We are looking forward to playing them."

The winner of Tuesday's game will move on to play Utah Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT. The loser will play the loser of the San Diego State, UNLV game Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT.
