Law's Triple Play Leads to TCU Matchup

Image

SAN DIEGO -- Shortstop Andrew Law's unassisted triple play Thursday highlighted BYU's 8-2 victory over San Diego State before the Cougars were eliminated by No. 7 TCU, 12-5 in the nightcap.

Thursday’s games not only ended the Cougars’ 31-27 season at the Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament, but also ended the 12-year era of BYU’s athletic participation in the league. Many of BYU’s teams move on to the West Coast Conference next season.

The fans Tony Gwynn Stadium, however, were still buzzing about Law’s triple play which occurred in the day’s doubleheader.

“I was yelling fire, fire,” said second baseman Dane Nielsen in reminding Law what to execute in the seventh inning of the BYU-SDSU game with a 7-1 lead.

“The ball came off the bat and didn’t drift as far as I thought when I camped under it,” said Law, describing how he `sold’ the umpires to call the infield fly rule. “I knew then we had one out and I looked to see a bunch of guys around second. I’ve played college baseball for five years and always wanted to do something funky if I could.”

The confusion was reminiscent of Abbot and Costello’s famous “Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.”

Scored as a 6-U-U-U, with one out in the books from the infield fly rule, Law completed the triple play with the bases loaded. He alertly tagged Cody Smith before the Aztec could return to second base, and then ran down Pat Colwell who tried to advance, then retreat back to first base.

The triple play was the fourth in BYU history, the second one in which Law has been involved. In 2009 at Provo, he was part of a 5-4-3 triple play against New Mexico.

That triple play put a dagger in any comeback San Diego State was trying to mount.

BYU had built that 7-1 lead over the Aztecs, capitalizing on other SDSU miscues.

Cougar Dillon Robinson’s high fly plopped between three converging fielders in left-center for a double to lead off the third. On the first Aztec offering two batters later, Law laced a single to left-center scoring Robinson on a close play at the plate to put BYU up 1-0.

BYU leftfielder Ryan Bernal hustled hard on the turn past first for a lead-off double in the fourth and he scored when Alex Wolfe hit to the right side, drawing an errant overthrow from second to first for a 2-0 advantage. Wolfe avoided a swipe tag off Wes Guenther’s 1-5-6 fielder’s choice and put BYU up 3-0 when he crossed home on Nielsen’s single.

That 3-0 lead was a boon to pitcher Desmond Poulson who improved his record to 6-0 off of an eight strikeout performance in six innings.

The 3-0 lead TCU took over the Cougars in the first inning later in the afternoon was a downbeat.

“I am disappointed our season is over,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We had high aspirations.

“When TCU took a 3-0 lead, the wind was taken out of our sails and we had to play catch up.”

The attempted comebacks against TCU started when Bernal smacked first pitch leading off the second inning for a home run which cleared two fences, closing the gap to 3-1.

Wolfe hit an opposite field double off the leftfield wall to score Bernal and close the gap in the fourth to 4-2. Robinson pegged Kyle Von Tungeln at home on wide slide of to prevent a Horned Frog score in the fourth.

Stephen Wells hit a two-run single between second and first off full count to score Austin Hall and Guenther in the seventh, closing the margin to 8-5.

Top-seeded TCU improved to 41-16 amassing four more runs in the eighth to seal the 12-5 win and remain alive in the loser's bracket.

Opening With Lobos in MWC Tourney

Image

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU baseball team [29-25, 11-12] opens play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament Tuesday against New Mexico [16-39, 10-14) at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, California.

In conjunction with the start of the tournament, Jaycob Brugman and Matthew Neil received 2011 All-MWC honors. Brugman was named a first-team outfielder and freshman of the year while Neil was one of four starting pitchers named to the second team.

Brugman led the Cougars in hitting with a .339 batting average in 2011, while adding nine home runs, 18 doubles and 47 RBI.

After posting a 6-4 recording with a 2.22 ERA during the regular season, Neil is slated to start against the No. 6 seeded Lobos, with opening pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.

"We haven't been hitting balls on the button the way we are capable of doing," said BYU coach Vance Law. "New Mexico is a good team that competes well. I'm guessing they will throw Jaramillo who was effective against us. We are looking forward to playing them."

The winner of Tuesday's game will move on to play Utah Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT. The loser will play the loser of the San Diego State, UNLV game Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT.
