Day 1 Recap

ALBUQUERQUE -- The BYU men’s golf team finished play at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday, placing third in the 17-team field at 3-over par (867). Senior Robbie Filmore tied for third among the 104 golfers competing.

“We had a pretty good day,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “I’m pretty impressed with the way the guys played today. We handled a tough stretch of holes and played great in the first and third rounds.”

After play was suspended in Friday’s second round, the Cougars took to the course Saturday with 21 holes to play. Fillmore birdied his second hole of the day to move to 2-under-par for the second round and 5-under overall heading into the final 18 holes. The senior proceeded to birdie five holes in the third round to jump into first place temporarily before recording bogies on two of the last three holes to finish the day 6-under-par overall (69-70-71--210). For the tournament, Fillmore posted eight bogeys and 14 birdies, including birdies on the 9th, 10th and 11th holes in all three rounds.

“I felt really good today,” said Fillmore. “I didn’t end as well as I would’ve liked but I’m happy with the results of the first tournament of the year. We have a great team.”

Sophomore Jordan Rodgers also had a strong finish as he went 4-under in the third round to go from 34th place to 13th at 1-under (72-75-68--215) for the tournament. His 68 on the day featured six birdies and was the best BYU round of the weekend.

“Robbie played great, but I was also really happy with Jordan Rodgers,” said Brockbank. “He had an awesome round and played solid all day long. They both really kept us in there.”

Senior Brady Johnson went 1-over-par in the third round to finish +5 (73-75-73--221) for the tournament, tied for 33rd. Zach Blair was +7 (73-75-75--223), and Alton Anderson was +8 (76-73-75--224) to finish tied for 48th and 52nd, respectively.

UNLV took home the tournament title as the Rebels went 21-under-par (843). San Diego State finished second at 5-under (859). Individually, UNLV’s Derek Ernst and Colby Smith tied for the championship at 8-under-par (208).

The Cougars will next be in action on Oct. 5-6 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic hosted by Notre Dame.
