SALT LAKE CITY -- The BYU men’s tennis team wrapped up competition, taking the doubles title against Utah at the Utah Intercollegiates Saturday.
"Despite some bright spots, this tournament underscored what the coaching staff already knew," head coach Brad Pearce said. "We have to get better as individuals and as a team. Our dedication to improvement needs to take on a whole new level of urgency starting on Monday."
Junior Francis Sargeant and sophomore Andrey Goryachkov defeated Utah’s Slim Hamza and Devin Lane, 8-6.
Following the doubles title match, Sargeant faced Utah’s Hamza for the singles title. He lost 6-4, 6-4.
The Cougars are in action at the end of the month when they head to California for the 57th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Oct. 30 - Nov. 2.

PROVO, Utah--Members of the BYU men's tennis team will compete against players from Utah State, Weber State and Utah this weekend in the Utah Intercollegiates tournament in Salt Lake City.
"This is the first competition after practicing for a few weeks," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "We're looking to see how we have improved and how the improvement holds up in match competition."
The tournament begins 9 a.m. Thursday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, located at 1216 Wasatch Dr., Salt Lake City, UT 84108. In case of inclement weather, competition will be moved indoors to the Eccles Tennis Center on the University of Utah campus.
Play will continue through Saturday with results available at utahutes.com following each day of competition.
Spectators are welcome and admission is free.
