CHATTANOOGA -- BYU's Erik Nyman and Carlos Lozano lost 8-1 Friday to top-seeded Scott Lipsky and David Martin of Stanford in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Men's ITA All-American Championships.
The Cougars started the match strong, winning the first game by breaking service. But after one bad service game by Lozano, Lipsky and Martin rattled off eight straight games to win the match. Lozano and Nyman didn't hold serve the whole match.
"We learned why they are the top-seeded doubles team in this tournament," said BYU head coach Jim Osborne. "After that first game, everything they hit went in. Lipsky and Martin are a seasoned team and they played textbook doubles today."
The eighth seeded Nyman and Lozano advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Phil Stolt and Brian Wilson of Illinois, 8-4 in the first round and Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig of Oregon, 8-6 in the second round.
Despite the tough loss to Stanford, Osborne said he felt like Lozano and Nyman both had a great tournament.
"We have a great team this year, we just need more experience," Osborne said. "I know we will be ready to play them (Stanford) again in March."
The men's tennis team has the week off next week before they travel to Las Vegas to participate in the ITA Region VII Championships Oct. 23-27.
PROVO -- Erik Nyman and All-American Carlos Lozano will compete as one of the main draw doubles teams in the 2002 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships held in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Oct. 10-14.
Nyman and Lozano have also been selected to participate in the singles qualifying portion of the All-American Championships on Oct. 8-9.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships include 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played Oct. 4-7, which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct. 8-9. The 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw takes place Oct. 10-14. The singles tournament fields can run over 300 players, making it the largest collegiate event of the season.
The All-American Championships is not only the largest single tournament of this season in collegiate tennis, but also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season.
The All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
This year's event will be hosted at the Champions Club and sponsored by Chattem, Inc. a Chattanooga pharmaceutical firm who has chosen Icy Hot to be title sponsor. This event has been played annually since 1979.
