Sophomore Carrie Summerhays shot a season low round of 71 to finish second overall at the Bay Area Classic while helping her team to a fifth-place finish on Tuesday.
"Carrie played with more confidence than she has all season," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "I think as a team we struggled that first day, but they all seemed to come back with more confidence that second round."
The Cougars, who got off to a slow eighth-place start shooting 322 the first round, seemed to shake off the winter cobwebs the second round. BYU shot a 310 the second day jumping from eighth place to fifth place overall.
Fifteenth-ranked Pepperdine won the tournament by 19 strokes followed by San Diego State and California. Summer Pierce was the second leading Cougar placing 33rd after shooting a second round score of 76.
BYU's next tournament is March 6-8 at the Spartan Invitational in Monterrey, California. This will be a very important tournament for the Cougars as they will be facing four top-20 teams.
"The top half of the field is really strong," Howard said. "We need to get off to a good start and play well against Hawaii. It is one of those teams we need to do well against to qualify for regionals. I think the attitude of this team is good and we should come out and have a good tournament."

After a successful fall campaign, the BYU women's golf team starts its spring season with hopes of improving its regional ranking in the Bay Area Golf Classic on Monday.
"Our spring season is pretty simple as far as what we have to accomplish to qualify for regionals," head coach Gary Howard said. "There are a few key teams we have to beat in head-to-head competition."
BYU will face two of those key teams in the Bay Area Classic. Host Cal State and Nevada Reno are both ranked higher than BYU, but Howard feels confident in his team's ability to beat both schools. BYU must also compete well against 13th-ranked Pepperdine, who is considered the favorite in a field of 18 teams.
"As far as we're concerned, there are only three other teams besides us in this tournament (Pepperdine, Cal, and Nevada-Reno)," Howard said. "If we can finish third or higher it would be a big step for us to qualify for regionals."
BYU will be led by senior Nicole Parry and sophomore Carrie Summerhays. Both are coming off top-10 finishes in the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic. Junior Summer Pierce and sophomores Jessica Gardner and Adrianne Gibby will also compete for the Cougars.
