PROVO, Utah — No. 4 BYU women's soccer poured on five second-half goals as they defeated New Mexico 6-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at South Field on Saturday.

It was the eighth time that the Cougars have scored six or more goals this season and seventh time that they’ve done so in Provo. 

"What a fun night for us, for our seniors and for our fans,” said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Congratulations to New Mexico, they had a fantastic season and really made it challenging for us, especially in that first half defensively. I'm really proud of the team. I'm happy for our staff and everybody that's a part of it. It was just a great game tonight."

BYU totaled 41 shots to UNM's four, including 13 shots on goals to the Lobo's one. Five different Cougars scored goals, including Brecken Mozingo, who netted two of BYU's five goals in the final 45 minutes.

First Half

After a scoreless 35 minutes in which BYU outshot New Mexico 13-1, the Cougars got on the board in the 36th. Lobo goalkeeper Emily Johnson came out to help clear a ball, but it got away from New Mexico and Cameron Tucker led it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The goal put Tucker ahead of Elise Flake and into sixth all-time in school history with 41 career goals. 

Second Half

BYU remained on the attack early in the second half and benefitted from a Mozingo goal in the 53rd minute to go ahead 2-0. It was her first goal since scoring twice at Gonzaga on Oct. 2. 

Just minutes later, in the 55th, Mozingo netted a line drive from nearly the same spot as her first goal, giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.

Jamie Shepherd followed up Mozingo’s two with a goal of her own, her first of the season, putting BYU up 4-0 in the 64th minute. 

In the 69th, Kendell Petersen put a cross in the box that ricocheted off a New Mexico player’s heel in for an own goal and 5-0 Cougar lead.

Ellie Maughan then connected in the 71st for BYU's third goal in a matter of seven minutes to lead 6-0.

The Cougars will head to Charlottesville, Virginia for a matchup with Alabama in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.

LAST TIME ON THE FIELD. BYU accomplished a thrilling double-overtime victory against No. 16 Pepperdine to secure a share of the WCC Championship title. Cameron Tucker scored the golden goal game winner in the 104th minute off of a rebound on a free kick. The Cougars outshot the Waves 12-2 in the first 40 minutes of the game, but ultimately went to the locker room scoreless at halftime. Tucker had a near-goal opportunity in the 59th minute that the goalkeeper got a touch on, leading to a deflection off the far post. Subsequent shots came from both Jamie Shepherd and Mikayla Colohan, but both were stopped. The Cougars went into their third overtime game of the season. BYU had a scoring opportunity in the 94th minute off another shot from Tucker. The first overtime ended scoreless. A yellow card was issued, and a free kick was taken by Brecken Mozingo in the 104th minute. Mozingo sent the ball into the box, where the ball was saved by the goalkeeper and Tucker followed up on the rebound to put the ball away off the far post and won the game 1-0.

WCC HONORS. On Monday, the Cougars swept WCC Player of the Week honors, with Cassidy Smith named the WCC Defensive POW and Tucker as the WCC Offensive POW. On Thursday, Colohan was named the WCC Offensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year. Colohan also collected the WCC's newest award as the conference's Midfielder of the Year. Tucker, Shepherd and Colohan were named All-WCC First Team, with Bella Folino and Mozingo on the All-WCC Second Team. Olivia Smith was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.

THE LOBOS. The Lobos are 14-4-2 on the season coming off a win against Boise State to secure a Mountain West Championship. It’s their first MWC championship in 10 years. Senior forward Jadyn Edwards scored a golden goal just 35 seconds into overtime to clinch the title for the Lobos, their second title in program history. New Mexico's trip to the 2020 NCAA Tournament included a matchup against Navy in the first round, advancing on penalty kicks 4-2. The Lobos then fell to TCU 6-2 in the second round. Overall, the Lobos have a 0-3-1 record in NCAA Tournament play. They went to the First Round in 2010, 2011 and advanced as far as the second round in the 2020 season.

COUGARS VS. LOBOS. BYU was a member of the Mountain West Conference from 1999 to 2010, so the Cougars and Lobos have faced each other 21 times, with BYU holding a 15-4-2 all-time record over New Mexico. The last time the two teams met was in an infamous, physical double-overtime Mountain West battle at South Field in 2010.
