Lincoln, Neb. (Nov. 15, 2001) With its 11th shutout of the year, BYU's women's soccer team advanced into the round of 32 after a 1-0 win over Kansas, Thursday.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars' Lydia Ojuka put BYU on the board with a kick into the far left corner of the post just past the Jayhawks keeper at the 75-minute mark. All-American Aleisha Cramer and junior forward Jeni Willardson Viernes were credited with the assists. It was Ojuka's sixth goal of the season. BYU outshot Kansas 20 to nine in the game.
"This was a very close game and when we talked at half time we thought it would come down to a 1-0 victory and I'm just glad we ended up on the winning side," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We struggled a bit tonight especially in the first half, but we fought through it, kept our composure and got the job done," she added.
The win over Kansas extends BYU's record to 14-6-1 and their winning streak stays alive at six games. The Jayhawks, who were making their first trip into the NCAA tournament end their season with a 13-8-0 record.
In the next round of the NCAA 2001 Women's College Cup the Cougars will play the winner of the Nebraska vs Boston College game. That matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick off on Sat. Nov. 17 at the Abbott Sports Complex on the Nebraska campus.

Provo, UT. (Nov. 12, 2001) -- BYU's women's soccer team is Nebraska bound this week representing the Mountain West Conference in this year's NCAA Women's Soccer College Cup. The Cougars first- round opponent will be Kansas.
The Cougars and Jayhawks will meet Thursday, Nov. 15 in Lincoln, Neb., in one of 16 regional sites for this year's 64 team championship. The Cornhuskers play Boston College in the other Thursday game with the winners playing on Saturday.
"Obviously our team is very excited for the opportunity to extend our season and are looking forward to playing Kansas," said Cougar head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "It's been our goal all season to make it into post season play and to do our very best and now we get a chance to make it all happen," added Rockwood.
This is the fifth straight year the BYU team has played in the post-season women's soccer tourney. In its previous four appearances, BYU advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen," twice, the last time was in 2000. The 13-6-1 Cougars are expected to travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Wednesday. The team's travel schedule and game times will be announced later.
