LARAMIE -- Senior Jeni Viernes scored her sixth goal of the season to give BYU a 1-0 win over conference foe Wyoming, the fifth win in a row for the Cougars. BYU now stands at 8-5-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while the Cowgirls fall to 4-8-1 and 0-2-0, respectively.
"We got off to a great start and played the best 25 minutes we've played all season," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood.
Viernes' headed the ball in off a corner kick from teammate Aleisha Cramer-Rose in the 10th minute of the game, a trend of late as Rose has delivered corner kicks resulting in goals in several recent games.
The Cougars out-shot the Cowgirls 23-3 for the game and came close on several shots, but were never able to extend their lead.
"We kept pushing and pushing but it just didn't happen," Rockwood said. "We didn't play as well in the second half, which tends to happen when the goals don't go in, but I was pleased with our start."
BYU's three-week win streak dates back to its Sept. 27 win over St. Mary's in Provo. Since that win, the Cougars have played, and won, four-straight road games, including two wins to start the conference season.
"We knew it was going to be a fresh start," said Rockwood. "It means a lot to start 2-0 in the conference; the teams are much improved."
Two more road games await BYU before it returns to Provo. The Cougars head to New Mexico to face the Lobos Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., and then the team will face Notre Dame in South Bend Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
BYU will resume conference play when it returns home to South Field Thursday, Oct. 24 in a 7 p.m. tilt with UNLV.
