No. 11 ASU Defeats BYU in Tough Game At Home

Starting off the game with a one goal lead, the BYU women's soccer team couldn't hold on against a talented Arizona State squad, falling 3-2 at South Stadium on Saturday.

During a rain-filled first half, BYU junior Jamie Rendich scored the first goal nine minutes into the game. The goal was Rendich's second of the season. ASU's forward Katie Leahy connected in the 18th minute tying the score at one goal a piece. Elizabeth Bogus put the Sun Devils up in the 33rd minute, and sent her team into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The rain ceased in the second half and freshman Natalie Nate scored her first collegiate goal on a long shot just over the fingertips of ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald. Just 54 seconds later, ASU answered with its third goal of the game, once again by Katie Leahy.

"I thought we came out really strong to start the game," said BYU women's head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We did some really nice things today, we just couldn't quite match ASU to the end."

BYU drops to 1-3 on the season and No. 11 ASU improves to 2-1. The Cougars play host to the Utah State Aggies at 7 p.m. Tuesday at South Stadium.

"We have played better with each game," Rockwood said. "We will need to continue to work hard this next week, particularly on our team defense, and we'll continue to improve."
