Defense Key in Victory

Image

PROVO -- Thanks to the stellar defense of the Cougars' back line, No. 12 BYU tallied yet another victory Saturday, with a 2-1 win over No. 21 University of Arizona (5-3-2). The Cougars advance to 11-0-1 after defeating the Wildcats.

"It was a battle," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Arizona was a very talented, very quick team. Our team defense was phenomenal, though. Erika (Woodbury) made a couple big time saves that kept us alive early. Our back four--Haylee Cuthbert, Nicole Anderson, Brooke Thulin and Jessica Harmon--did a tremendous job defensively all game."

Freshman Jessica Aquino found the back of the net first for BYU 33 minutes into the game. Bobbi Tillotson added the Cougars second goal in the 76th minute. Both goals were unassisted.

BYU held Mallory Miller, Arizona's dominant offensive threat, to one shot, which scored. She put the ball into the net just seven seconds after BYU scored its second goal. Preventing Miller from getting off more than one shot is quite a feat considering her credentials. With her ninth game-winning goal in her career last Sunday against UC-Santa Barbara, and fourth this season, Miller holds the program record in that category.

BYU and Arizona each had 13 shots. Woodbury saved the ball seven times.

The Cougars open up Mountain West Conference play at the friendly confines of South Stadium this weekend, when they will play the first two games of their four-game home stand. BYU will take on New Mexico on Thursday and the MWC's newest member, Texas Christian University, on Saturday. Game times are slated for 7 p.m.

"Going into conference play, we couldn't have asked for a better scenario." Rockwood said. "We had tough competition in our season before conference. We need to continue to get better and continue to grow as a team. Everything we've done up to this point is to prepare us for conference."

BYU Travels to the Valley of the Sun

Image

PROVO -- After beating three ranked opponents in 12 days, No. 12 BYU (9-0-1) travels to the Valley of the Sun, seeking to take down Arizona State (5-3-1) and Arizona (5-2-2), another ranked opponent at No. 21 Arizona this weekend. The Cougars play the Sun Devils on Thursday and the Wildcats on Saturday. Both games are slated for 6 p.m., MDT. Live Stats for the Arizona State game will be available at Arizona State. The non-conference games are the Cougars' last two before league play begins.

Elizabeth Bogus is the Sun Devils' major offensive threat, netting seven goals and providing two assists for 16 points. Bogus has help from Manya Makoskio, who has supplied five goals and two assists, and Emily Coehlo, contributing three goals and two assists. Leading the team with three assists is Alissa Oldenkamp. Goalkeeper Kim Bingham has saved the ball 31 times in nine games.

Mallory Miller fronts the Wildcat offensive with six goals on the season. With her ninth game-winning goal in her career on Sunday, fourth this season, Miller holds the program record in that category. Miller has benefited from the nice passing of Nikki David, who leads Arizona with four assists. Goalkeeper Smith McCall has spent 675 minutes in the net and posted 37 saves.

BYU leads the series against Arizona State 2-1, and Arizona 4-1. The Cougars lost both games last season.
