PROVO -- The No. 23 BYU women's soccer team made quick work of Southern Utah Friday evening, scoring two first-half goals, in its first of two pre-season exhibition games at South Stadium.
"This game is equally as important as any game we play," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Exhibition games are good to get lots of our players minutes and looks. We treated it as the most important game we will play all season. I was pleased with our effort and team work."
BYU got on the board in the 25th minute when Natalie Nate blew by the last defender to find herself facing a one-one-one with the keeper. Nate took it right at Holly Davis and gently tapped the ball left to Carolyn Swenson who came screeching up field to score the goal.
The Cougars scored their second and final goal of the evening with two minutes remaining in the first half. In a scramble, Annie Zwahlen passed the ball to Jessica Aqunio, who quickly flipped the ball over to Katie Smurthwaite for a one-touch goal.
Southern Utah had a couple of nice looks, but was unable to convert. The team's best chance for a goal came in the 36th minute when Brooklyn Phillips drew out the Cougar goalie, but misfired at the open goal.
BYU held Southern Utah to three shots on the game, including zero attempts in the second half of action. The Cougars earned 16 shots and five shots on goal.
The exhibition game was a chance to see several new faces as the Cougars started one freshman and six sophomores.
"We're still trying to find the right mix of players, but I think our final core group will be a nice combination of upperclassmen as well as lowerclassmen," Rockwood said. "We have a lot of talent in this group and it will be interesting to see how the playing time works itself out."
The Cougars play another exhibition game on Monday against Dixie State at 5 p.m. The season opens on Aug. 25 against Weber State. Game time is slated for 7 p.m., at South Stadium.
