PROVO -- No. 20 BYU (2-0-0) treated the 1,024 fans in attendance to an exciting game, handing Idaho State (1-2-0) its second loss of the season, 2-1, thanks to a Brooke Bowman overtime goal.
It was a physical game marked by defensive intensity for the Cougars in the first half. BYU dominated the ball and held its opponent to only three first half shots.
"Defensively we were very solid," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We knew they like to serve up long balls and get behind the defense. We did a nice job of reading when they were serving balls."
It was also a half marked by missed opportunities and misfortune. BYU took nine shots before the break and missed each of them including two shots on goal.
With just under 19 minutes to go in the opening half, forward Amberlea Anderson received a yellow card for a late tackle on the Bengals' Jennifer Loo. Loo capitalized on the penalty on the ensuing free kick when her kick from mid-field bounced twice and over BYU goalkeeper Erica Woodbury's head to put Idaho State up 1-0. The score held up until halftime.
"You never know when those little things are going to come up," Rockwood said of the unlucky bounce. "But I'm really proud of the way we fought back. We were so close [to scoring] in the first half, and they didn't get frustrated. They kept fighting back."
The Cougars' persistence paid off in the fifth minute of the second half when Bengals' goalkeeper Lyndsay Gensler came out of the box to defend BYU forward Carolyn Swenson. Swenson tapped the ball sideways to Anderson who placed the ball in between the goalie and her last defender for the tying goal.
"[Anderson] is such a workhorse on our team," Rockwood said. "I thought she would come out and set the tone for us, and she did that."
In the fourth minute of overtime Swenson again connected with a teammate--this time Bowman--for a pass from the baseline. Bowman collected the ball and kicked in the golden goal.
The Cougars hit the road on Friday to face Georgia at 5 p.m.

PROVO -- No. 23 BYU (1-0-0) plays its second home game of the season Tuesday against Idaho State (1-1-0) at 7 p.m., before traveling to Georgia to face the No. 18 Bulldogs (2-0-0) Friday at 7 p.m.
The Cougars pulled out a 1-0 win over Weber State in a four-hour home-opener on Saturday caused by lightening delays and stadium lighting malfunctions. BYU looks to strengthen its attack this week as the new mix of players find their rhythm together. The Cougars' starting lineup welcomes five new players, including two sophomores and two freshmen.
Tuesday's game will be the sixth meeting between BYU and Idaho State with the last encounter coming in 2004 when the Bengals defeated BYU 3-1 in Idaho. Friday's game will be the first matchup between Georgia and the Cougars.
