SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Two goals in a strong second half helped the Cougars overcome a slow start and defeat Cal Poly 2-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday evening.
“We were flat in the first half, and had a poor start,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “Cal Poly dominated the first part of the game and it took us some time to get settled down.”
Cal Poly’s Ashley Vallis scored from right in front of the goal to give the Mustangs the lead at the 38:11 mark in the first half.
Cal Poly took the lead into halftime, but the Cougars came out with a change of plans.
“We switched some things up in the second half,” said Rockwood. “We used some different players and different formations.”
The change resulted in the Cougars out-shooting Cal Poly 8-1 the second half.
Just four minutes after the break, All-American forward senior Katie Larkin was pulled down in the penalty box and converted the ensuing penalty kick opportunity to tie the game at 1-1. That goal was the 27th of Larkin’s career, moving her within one of current team assistant coach Aleisha Rose on the all-time goals scored list at BYU.
Later in the second half, sophomore defender Nicole Urry kicked a free kick to freshman Lauren Anderson who passed the ball forward. Freshman forward Auna Janis took the ball and dribbled down the center of the field and scored the first goal of her young BYU career when she blasted a kick past the Cal Poly keeper from just outside the goal box for the game-winning score.
“Auna and Lauren Anderson came in during the second half and really gave us the spark we needed to get things going,” said Rockwood. “It was a great comeback win for us.”
The win moves the Cougars’ all-time season opener record to 11-2-1.
