Cougars Suffer Tough Road Setback in Loss to LSU

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Aug. 25, 2008) – The Cougars battled but were unable to overcome a tough LSU attack and fell to the Tigers on the road 4-1 Monday evening in Baton Rouge. “It was a disappointing loss for us,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “But that’s what the preseason is for – to come and play these kind of teams. We learned a lot about the team and we did some good things – we just have to bounce back.” LSU scored two quick goals, one just six minutes into the game when midfielder Michelle Makasini scored on a pass from Malorie Rutledge. The Tigers scored again when Melissa Clark shot from outside the box about 27 minutes into the game. BYU’s lone goal in the game came with 6:11 in the first half when senior forward Alyssa Vander Veur headed a corner kick from Ashleigh Jameson past the LSU keeper into the goal. “We had great momentum going into halftime, but the third goal really just knocked the wind of us,” said Rockwood. LSU freshman goalie Mo Isom kicked a free kick about 10 yards outside of the Tigers’ penalty area and the ball sailed most of the length of the field, hit the ground and took an unpredictable bounce and went over freshman goalkeeper McKinzie Olson’s head into the goal. “When you have a slick surface like that, it’s really hard to judge what the ball is going to do,” said Rockwood. “McKinzie had some great saves, and that one shot was difficult.” LSU capped the scoring at the 68 minute mark when senior forward Roslyn Jones headed the ball into the goal for the final 4-1 tally. Come support the Cougars when they open their 2008 home schedule on Friday, Aug. 29 against the University of Georgia. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. Arizona visits South Field at 4:00 p.m. on Mon. Sept. 1. Both games will be broadcast live on BYUTV and KBYU.
