PROVO -- With two goals the BYU women’s soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak and beat the Idaho State Bengals 2-0 in front of 2,071 fans at South Field Saturday night.
“We came out strong like we knew we could,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood.
“This win is a step in the right direction. The two goals were big for us.”
Freshman goalkeeper McKinzie Olson recorded her first career shutout and notched two saves.
Two Cougars tallied their first goals of the season in the winning effort. Junior midfielder Whitney Feller scored in at the 32:21 mark when she was able to corral a loose ball in the box that had bounced off the goalie and put it in to the goal.
Four minutes later, freshman forward Jennie Marshall found the back of the net of the first time as a Cougar when she was able to score off of another rebound that Idaho State freshman keeper Bailey Williams was unable to contain.
“We knew we had some good freshmen,” said Rockwood. “They’re contributing and continuing to come through for us.”
The Cougars took the 2-0 lead to halftime. They outshot Idaho State 13-4 in the first half.
BYU was apply to apply consistent pressure throughout the second half, with 14 shots on goal, but wasn’t able to get the ball past Williams.
The win pushes BYU's record to an even 4-4-0, while ISU drops to 2-4-0.
The Cougars travel to face the University of Miami on Tuesday, Sept. 16 – the match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. BYU’s next home game takes place the following Friday when they face the Michigan State Spartans of the Big Ten on Saturday, Sept. 19. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Fans attending the Michigan State game at South Field are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy live music from the football tailgate band Funkalicious, pre-game trivia contests with prizes, and two pairs of tickets to the BYU-Wyoming football game will be given away at halftime. BYUSA and Cougar United will provide free hotdogs to all students with ID. The game will be broadcast live on BYUTV and KBYU.

PROVO -- After suffering two disappointing road defeats, BYU looks to bounce back this week against Long Beach State on Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. The Cougars then hope continue their home success when they face Idaho State on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. at South Field.
The 49ers were picked to finish second in the Big West Conference, edged by only one point by UC Santa Barbara. The 49ers have won the last two Big West regular season titles. Long Beach has out-scored its opponents 11-4, and two of their wins were shutouts. They are also out-shooting their opponents by an average of 13.6 to 5.6 shots per game. Kristen Kiefer is the 49ers leading scorer on the season with three goals. Three players (Hayley Bolt, Kim Silos and Lindsay Bullock) have all scored twice. The Beach has notched 37 corner kick attempts while they have allowed their opponents only seven.
The Bengals were picked to finish sixth in the Big Sky Conference after posting a 2-2-3 conference record in 2007. Idaho State won its first two games before losing the next three. They are 1-1-0 on the road this season. Statistically, the Bengals are being out-shot by their opponents 44-75. The team has scored five goals and allowed seven on the season. Five players have each scored one goal; junior midfielder Annamarie Hofstetter leads the team with 11 shots.
The Cougars have done well at South Field, posting a 2-0 record so far this year, outscoring their two opponents 5-1.
