SAN -- After two 10-minute overtime periods, a 2-2 tie at San Diego State gives the No. 9 BYU Cougars it’s eighth unbeaten game and a 10-2-2 overall, 1-0-1 conference record this season.
"I thought our team battled hard today," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Conference games are always a challenge, especially on the road."
The first overtime saw little action on both sides with the Cougars taking zero shots and San Diego only getting off one. The Cougars were able to out-shoot the Aztecs in the second overtime and had a great look at the goal from Auna Janis but couldn’t put a goal in the net and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
With the first half void of any goals from the Cougar lineup, San Diego State went into the half up 1-0 after a goal from Allie Crowson in the third minute of the first half.
The Cougars went into the half with seven shots and three corner kicks. They ended the game with 15 shots and seven corners kicks.
The second half saw BYU ready to take the win. The Cougars put two goals on the board in the first 19 minutes of play to go up 2-1.
A goal from freshman Jessica Ringwood, her third of her collegiate career, came in the 52nd minute of play. Ringwood was recently named MWC Player-of-the-Week and a member of TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week.
Teammate Kassidy C. Shumway scored one of her own in the 64th minute off an assist from freshman Carlee Payne and sophomore Lauren Anderson. Shumway has scored three goals this season.
Just when BYU thought it had the win, a goal with two minutes remaining from San Diego’s Megan McQueeny would put the Cougars into their sixth overtime game of the season.
"We came out strong in the second half and scored a couple great goals to take the lead," Rockwood said. "It was tough to give up a goal in the last few moments of the game, but overall I was proud of our efforts."
This is the second game of the season that the Cougars have tied after also tying against the University of Hawaii in their season opener on Aug. 21.
BYU now holds a 1-0-1 record in conference and will next play UNLV in Las Vegas on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT.
