Tough First Loss of Season for No. 9 BYU

Image

AUSTIN -- Despite holding the No. 20 Texas Longhorns (6-1-1) to just six shots on the night, where they'd previously averaged 15 per game, the BYU women's soccer team (7-1-1) suffered a tough 1-0 loss to the home team.

"We came out strong against a tough opponent," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "And obviously it's tough to lose but the girls really battled hard tonight. We weren't as sharp as we needed to be against a great opponent but we'll have plenty of time to improve before our next game."

Forwards Carlee Payne and Jennie Marshall led the Cougars with two shots apiece with teammates Lindsi Lisonbee and Jessica Ringwood contributing one shot each.

Under wet and muggy conditions, BYU and Texas tied with six shots each on the night. The Longhorns have previously averaged 15 shots per game this season. The Cougars have now held all their 2010 opponents, but one, to single-digit shot performances.

Longhorn Leah Fortune snuck in the first goal of the game after just two minutes of action to give Texas the lead in the first half.

The Cougars came back from a 0-4 shot deficit to getting three straight shots on goal and putting the count at 3-4 before the teams left the field for halftime with the last shot of the half coming from BYU's Payne.

Texas has averaged seven shots per game in the first half of play this season but the Cougar defense kept them to just four in the evening's match-up.

The Longhorns have met three Top-25 teams this season with a 2-1-0 record against them. BYU is the fourth Top-25 team to compete against the Longhorns.

Up next for the No. 9 Cougars is another game on the road against in-state rival Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.

Two Weekend Games in Texas

Image

PROVO -- After playing five straight home games the BYU women's soccer team will now travel South to play two games in Texas this weekend, starting Saturday against Rice University and then Monday against No. 20 University of Texas. Both games are set to play at 7 p.m. CT.

The Cougars are traveling with an undefeated 6-0-1 record after their first tie of the season came against LSU on Sept. 9. The No. 9 ranking from Soccer America was released Monday and is one of the highest rankings BYU has received this early in the season.

Forward Jennie Marshall leads the Cougar offense with six goals on the year and teammate senior Kassidy Shumway has three.

Saturday's match-up will be the first time the Rice Owls and Cougars have ever played each other. The Owls are posting a 3-4-0 record this season after its most recent 1-0 loss at Oklahoma.

The No. 20 (Soccer Times) Longhorns and No. 9 Cougars are meeting Monday for the fourth time in BYU program history. Their last meeting was in the first round of the 2007 NCAA tournament when the Longhorns came away with the 2-0 victory. This season, Texas is carrying a 5-1-1 record with its most recent 4-0 shutout win coming over William & Mary.

BYU's overall road record is 119-49-18 and 2-0 this season under head coach Jennifer Rockwood.

Live stats for both games can be accessed through the BYU women's soccer schedule page and live video can also be seen for Monday's game.
