Image

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Oct. 16, 2010) - In an even matchup between conference opponents, the No. 8 BYU women's soccer team fell a tough 1-0 to the homestanding No. 25 New Mexico Lobos.

BYU forward Jennie Marshall led the team with four shots on the night. Teammates Kassidy Shumway and Lauren Anderson each also added three to the team's 14, the second highest total shots taken this season by the Cougars.

After 103 minutes of tough and physical soccer in double overtime, the New Mexico senior Kate Wyrick snuck a ball past BYU goalie McKinzie Olson for the win.

With the clock winding down in the second overtime, Olson came out to meet the two-on-one Lobo attack and saved the first ball but Wyrick caught the rebound and headed it past Olson to the back of the net.

Olson came up huge for the team, making numerous big saves and defending all the way to the end. She recorded 10 saves in front of the goal for the Cougars.

First half action featured an exciting back-and-forth matchup with both teams taking good shots on goal and the Cougar forwards keeping the pressure on New Mexico's defense.

The second half was a similar story with the Cougars augmenting their attack but the New Mexico defense keeping down any scoring opportunities.

Heading into the first overtime, BYU came out fast and took a quick shot on goal with Lobo goalkeeper Kelli Cornell stealing their momentum. With two minutes to play before the second overtime, a cross from BYU forward Carlee Payne set freshman Lynda Hercules with a header that bounced back into the field off the top bar.

Up next for the Cougars is their last two home games against UNLV and San Diego State on Thursday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 23. Both games will be played on South Field at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on BYUtv.

PROVO -- After moving back into the Nation's Top 10, the No. 8 BYU women's soccer team will take its game on the road with match-ups this week on Thursday and Saturday against TCU and New Mexico, respectively.

The Cougars are traveling with an 11-1-1 overall record this season and an undefeated 2-0 conference record thus far. They’re most recently coming off a 2-1 victory over the Air Force Falcons.

The 2010 Cougar squad, and defending 2009 regular season champions, were picked in this year's preseason coaches poll to again finish first in the regular season.

Junior Jennie Marshall leads the Cougar offense with seven goals and senior teammate Kassidy Shumway follows closely with six of her own. Shumway leads the team with 17 total points in 13 games.

Nine different players have recorded at least one goal for the Cougars this season for a total goal count of 31. When last year’s squad was ready to play its third conference game of the season, its total goal count was 21.

TCU will host the Cougars with a 7-6-1, 1-1-0 record and are on a two-game winning streak after victories over UNLV and Houston Baptist. Jordan Calhoun leads the Horned Frogs with six goals and 15 points this season.

New Mexico is currently 8-1-3 overall and also an undefeated 2-0 in conference play. Jennifer Williams leads the Lobos’ offense with seven goals and 18 points this season after 12 games.

BYU’s all-time road record is 121-50-18. They also hold an all-time 14-2-3 record against New Mexico and an 8-0-0 all-time record against TCU.

The next home game for the Cougars is on Thursday, Oct. 21, against UNLV at 7 p.m.
