Hannemann named WCC Player of Week, next up Utah
BYU freshman Jacob Hannemann is the Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week after helping the Cougars win their conference series over Santa Clara.
Hannemann finished the week 8 for 18 for a .444 average with two home runs, two doubles, one triple, six RBI and four runs scored. Hannemann's slugging percentage was 1.000 and he had an on-base percentage of .500 for the week.
Twice BYU's Hannemann was a hit shy of the cycle in last week's games. In the 8-0 defeat over Utah Valley University he lacked a triple in a 3-for-4 effort and in the 3-1 victory at Santa Clara he doubled, tripled and homered in another 3-for-4 outing.
Hannemann's two-run homer in that 3-1 victory was his second game-winning RBI of the season. He currently ranks No. 2 nationally in triples (5) and No. 1 in the WCC in triples and batting average against right-handed pitching (.393), and is No. 2 in hits (42) for the league. This past week he raised his batting average from .315 to .333.
Hannemann and the Cougars (17-14 overall, 5-4 in the WCC) will be in action Tuesday night against Utah in the Deseret First Duel after Monday's game with Washington State was cancelled due to rain in Provo.
Scheduled to start at 6 p.m. MDT, on the mound for BYU against Utah (14-14) is sophomore Jeff Barker (3-2, 4.36).
Pepperdine junior Corey Miller is the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Miller had a strong performance lifting Pepperdine to a 1-0 victory against the Washington Huskies on Saturday. Pitching 10 scoreless innings, he allowed three hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts. Miller did not walk a single batter and threw 118 pitches, 78 for strikes. The junior right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced and lowered his ERA to 2.40.
