Cougars in fifth after round one of The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. — BYU men's golf sits in fifth place out of 24 teams after the first round of The Goodwin held at Stanford Golf Course on Thursday.

"We are playing in a strong field with so many good, quality teams," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "It reminds me of an NCAA regional event. The conditions were really tough in the afternoon, the rough is long and the greens are firm and fast. The team hung in there pretty well today. We started solid and stayed focused the whole round. We had a few stray shots that cost us at the end, but it was nice to see all of the guys stay focused for 18 holes. Peter Kuest played solid all day today. It was nice to see him lead the team. The freshman is playing some good golf right now."

Kuest shot even par in the first round to lead the Cougars with a team-best 11th-place individual finish. The freshman birdied five holes in round one. Patrick Fishburn also posted a top-20 first round score. The junior, who is currently tied for 18th place, carded a 71. Fishburn fired 2-under on the front nine and shot 3-over on the back.

The Cougars sit behind Stanford, Washington, SMU and USC at 8-over-par. West Coast Conference foe Pepperdine is tied for eighth place, while Pacific is tied for 11th. Saint Mary's and San Francisco are in 15th and 21st place, respectively.

Rhett Rasmussen posted a 72 in Thursday's round of 18. Rasmussen is tied for 28th place going into round two. 

CJ Lee and Zach Pritchard both carded 5-over rounds in round one. The duo is tied for 63rd place after 18 holes of play.
