BYU men's golf 2016-17 season review
PROVO, Utah — After winning four regular season tournaments and a West Coast Conference Championship, the BYU men’s golf 2016-17 campaign has ended.
The Cougars finished the season ranked No. 46, according to Golfstat.com, while two Cougars ended the year ranked in the top 100.
The 2017 WCC Champions received an automatic bid to participate in regional play. The Cougars placed eighth at the NCAA Stanford Regional, shooting +12.
BYU recorded three tournament victories in the fall: The Olympic Club Intercollegiate, the Nick Watney Invitational and the Pacific Invitational. The team also placed first at its home event, the PING Cougar Classic, in the spring.
In April, BYU won its second WCC title with freshman Peter Kuest taking home medalist honors. Kuest fired 70-67-68 (-11) to beat Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh in a playoff hole.
Kuest tallied five top-20 finishes, two top-5 finishes and posted a 72.79 stroke average during 2016-17. The freshman was also named to the All-WCC First Team.
Patrick Fishburn led the Cougars with 11 top-20 finishes in the 2016-17 season. The junior also recorded five top-5 finishes, including a first-place victory at the Pacific Invitational.
Boasting a 70.62 stroke average during the 2016-17 campaign, Fishburn received All-WCC first team honors and was named Co-Player of the Year. The junior finished the season ranked No. 30 by Golfstat.com.
Rhett Rasmussen also finished the season ranked in the top 100 nationally. Rasmussen, who was named the WCC Freshman of the Year and received a WCC first team nod, ended the year ranked No. 78 by Golfstat.com.
Rasmussen placed in the top 20 eight times during the 2016-17 season. His first collegiate win came at The Goodwin, where he carded a second-round 64.
CJ Lee recorded two top-20 finishes in 2016-17 and shot a season-low 67 at the NCAA Stanford Regional. Spencer Dunaway placed in the top-20 four times during the season. His best finish came at the PING Cougar Classic, where he tied for third and shot -6.
The Cougars will lose senior Zach Pritchard. Pritchard finished his Cougar career with two top-20 finishes and a career-low 68.
