Medeiros equalizes in 1-1 draw with Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – An Elena Medeiros equalizer in the 20th minute was the only goal No. 6 BYU women’s soccer could find in a 1-1 draw at Cal Poly on Thursday night.
The Cougars (7-1-1) trailed for only the second time this season, but equalized in the 20th minute on Medeiros’ goal. Ashley Hatch sent a bouncing cross into the middle of the box and Medeiros one-touched it to the right corner of the net to tie the game. It was Medeiros' third goal of the season and ninth of her career.
“It was a tough match,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “Cal Poly came out and played hard. Obviously, we’re disappointed with not getting the result. We had some opportunities early where we could have made a difference in the game and we didn’t. That’s frustrating.”
Cal Poly (4-2-4) scored in the 5th minute as a through ball behind the back line led to a quick shot from Elise Krieghoff that skipped past Rachel Boaz to the far side of the goal.
For the rest of the game, BYU out shot Cal Poly 31-18, but the Mustangs put more of their shots on goal 8-4.
In the first half, Bizzy Phillips tested the keeper from deep and Hatch hit the crossbar from the top of the six. Paige Hunt pinged a shot off the crossbar in the 43rd minute. Nadia Gomes was able to find the end line and set up several shots early in the first half, but quality chances seemed to diminish as the game continued on.
In the second half, Cal Poly had the better chances on frame, but in overtime BYU only managed one shot on goal, but didn’t test Cal Poly keeper Alyssa Giannetti.
Hatch finished with 11 shots, one on goal. Michele Murphy Vasconcelos took five shots. Gomes and Medeiros attempted four shots, with Medeiros putting two on goal. Boaz made six saves in the game for BYU.
Phillips and Vasconcelos received yellow cards in the game, matching the Cougars cautions for the entire season.
The Cougars continue on to Long Beach on Saturday for the second game of the weekend. BYU faces Long Beach State on Saturday at 7 p.m. PDT. The game can be heard on the Cougar IMG Sports Network and ESPN 960 AM.
